No Bicycles allowed signage in North Park

On a paved road leading to the tennis courts in North Park, there is a sign indicating that no bicycles are allowed. (image at http://tinyurl.com/ncuu6y ).

Seemed pretty weird, considering that pedestrians, motorized two-wheel vehicles are allowed passage...

If I were to attempt a guess, and I could be wrong, is because the pedestrian and bike trail that goes around the lake, near that sign, goes up a hill, and pedestrians and cyclists were short-cutting by following this paved road to the boathouse, and reconnecting with the designated hike-bike trail. Maybe the moms at the playground between the tennis courts and the boathouse were complaining of cyclists zipping by too fast. ... just a guess...

also, I find it humorous that the sign is in two "languages": iconic and textual, one sign has the image of a bicycle crossed over with a diagonal red line, and the other sign is the prohibition message spelled out in English language alphabetical text.

That's been there for years and is definitely odd.

The intention could be to limit biking to the roads with wide shoulders that have been designated as bike/pedestrian lanes.

But, considering the age of the sign, the county either:

1. Was sued.

2. Put the sign up after a councilperson or constituent complained.

They still do that from time to time, but not as often as before.

That area should be redesigned. Even pedestrians and strollers use the area between the boat house and tennis courts. They use the road due to where there is a shoulder, its gravel. Unsafe to drive as cars are ignored. I'll bring this up at the next "Friends of North Park" meeting on July 9th at 7:00 PM at the Cabin in North Park. It may be part of the dredging project as $500,000.00 is slated for Lake trails. This has nothing to do with PTAG trails.

$500k!? Those trails will cost more than 3 million.

The area where this sign is located is outside the Army Corps/Allegheny County Ecosystem Restoration project limits. the project limit is a little bit past the boathouse and it's parking lot.

The sign has been there for at least 12 years, and it didn't look new when I first noticed it when I started regularly riding in North Park around 1997.

Which is more fun, poaching that road or the trails by the nature center?

Not that i have ever done either

Not that I've done either, but the trails by the nature center.
