OT: Sidi Touré at the Thunderbird Cafe tonight

From Mali, playing "Afro-beat / Blues / Roots Music". This is their first time in America and Pittsburgh is their first stop. Showtime 9pm; details here.

Note that Sidi is not related to the better known Ali Farka Touré ('Touré' being the 'Smith' or 'Jones' of Mali) but the music is in the same genre.

To mitigate the OT-ishness of of this post I am happy to announce the following bonus bike-pgh message board special offer: Spot, and introduce yourself to, the "mysterious" Ahlir and he will buy you a (draft) beer. Offer valid while there's money left in my pocket.

Gah! simultaneous post!

Nah, just kidding. Should be very cool, I would definitely be into it, but too much going on.

I keep missing the Malians when they come to town, that's two since I busted my ankle.

I've been listening to Malian music on Pandora a lot, they've got a nice selection and wide variety, only missing one song I can't find anywhere (even youtube). If you're looking for different Malian musicians, google the names "Toure", "Diabate", and "Keita" (with "music" or something similar). The middle one is an actual grio name, the other two are like smith and jones, but there are several really good musicians with each of those last names from Mali. The traditional stringed instrument from Mali is called a "kora" so you could google that too. Not all Malian musicians have anything to do with the Kora, but most will have at least one song featuring it. Otherwise it'd be like running a diner and not serving coffee.

And if anybody ever finds the "tigadigana kadi" song ("peanutbutter sauce is yummy"), PLEASE forward me a link. It's stupid, (Malian version of "peanut butter jelly time"), but for some reason now that I never hear it and can't find it, I really want to.

There is Malian music playing around the 3rd floor fish tanks at Carnegie Science Center quite a bit, but unfortunately the two Mali Uromastyx lizards on the 4th floor can not hear it.

dude, Malian uromastyx used to get up on my courtyard walls and throw rocks at each other (decent sized rocks, not pebbles) to argue over territory. Entertaining and not a problem until they chose the rock that was holding down my robe as I was in the bathroom, then the wind picked up and my robe flew away... awkward international moment ensued.

I need to go visit those lizards.
