Pitt to Altoona

I was just looking at the map for a friendly Pittsburgh -> Altoona route. Thought about taking William Penn Hwy the whole way, I've never driven it but I'm guessing it wouldn't be the best for cycling. I don't need to do it in a day so I'm also looking at cheap camping along the way.

Any ideas?

Skip 22. You'd have better luck taking the turnpike than that road.

have you checked bikely.com?

there's probably some decent routes on there.

Ya might also wish to ask Danny Chew; I know he rides out to State College occasionally. (Sometimes without eating or drinking anything on the way, but that's not recommended for most.)

I rode to altoona once.

Dont ride 22.

Buy a delorme atlas.

At the time i took saltsburg to 286 (dont ride 286 west of 380) and took it all the way until clymer pa.

580 to 36 into altoona.

big ridge going into toona.

today I would do it totally different, but if you

were going to ride 22 this is a lot better.

Unless you like to ride next to Semis hauling 70mph grazing your shoulder by less than a foot at times I would not recommend Route 22. It might save you a little bit of time and the hills may not be as steep as other routes, but it would be a miserable noisy, stress filled, and did anyone mention dangerous ride...

I have taken Route 380 / 286 out to Indiana before and it was quite pleasant the whole way.

Hey, I'm originally an Altoona-ish guy and have made the ride a few times.

Rte 22=death wish.

Oakmont to Logan's Ferry or 780 to Mammut to 286 to Indiana to Clymer to Nicktown to Carrolltown to Patton to Chest Springs to Ashville to Buckhorn to Altoona (PA rte 36 from Patton to Altoona) is the best, and somewhat longish, tour of Pennsyltucky you'll ever take. the RAAM went through here when i was in highschool.

however, for max speediness and a southerly route, Take PA bike route S to Mann's Choice (near Bedford) and follow whatever that state road is all the way up to Pavia (near Blue Knob) and then old/old rte 220 to claysburg to hollidaysburg and into Altoona.

Mann's Choice! '

One of my favorite town names on Route S. Isn't that near Burnt Cabins?

naw, burt cabins is two ridges over (about 20 miles East of breezewood). Mann's Choice is about 30 miles West of Breezwood).

you probably know the histories of the two town's names right?

Just roll up to Mann's Choice, head towards Intercourse, and don't make a wrong turn your you will end up in Blue Ball.

mann's choice- the notice came from the state to the local post office with regard's to naming the town. well, the post master simply wrote on the letter that the decision to name the town lay in the hands of (i think) mr. frederic mann. so the post master wrote back to the state that it was "mann's choice" and the state took that as the official name.

burnt cabins - at the time the kittaninny ridge was considered the western most boundary of the 13 colonies and it was forbidden by the Brits for any colonist to travel further westward. some early PA settlers went over the ridge and the first village established was at the current locale of Burnt Cabins. well, the redcoats later came and burned the village. in commerrance, the village (years later) was called Burnt Cabins.

I forgot to mention you could make a rest stop at Gobbler's Knob on your way to Intercourse...
