shoveling out is a lot easier for cyclists

I shoveled out this morning.

Cool! I like your shed.

The bright spot of my commute is passing all the poor suckers every morning scraping snow and ice off their cars and people who look freezing cold at the bus stops.

While shoveling didn't get mentioned in this amusing video, scraping of ice did: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sFQM9zXztM

I took the bus today and after 30 minutes of waiting was regretting not just walking downtown instead. I'm not quite badass enough to ride my bike down Fifth in this morning's conditions, though (although kudos to the guy who did and was followed by the 61D the whole way).

Tady is the first day this winter than I canned the bike and bussed it.

I was surprised at how much warmer it is walking than biking. I had gloves with liners, and ona bike at this temp, linered gloves covered by mittens would have been barely adequate.

But I rode a (gag) motor vehicle to work.

I feel so dirty.

Think of it this way: In a car, you might be getting 20 person-miles per gallon, driving solo. On a bus, you are getting 150 person-miles per gallon, or better. The bike beats all, of course, but if you really have to ride a (gag) motor vehicle, you can do so with a clean conscience.

So I finally shoveled out the rest of the driveway. Same shovel, same level of exertion, this time it took 60+ minutes.

I went in on Friday, put myself on a two hour delay, but drove to the shuttle (yeah, late kids, irritated parents, ploughs, AND crap roads? I'm not a badass I guess).

This morning I went out to start the car, and though I followed proper procedure, the interwebs indicate that to start my particular vehicle in this temperature, I need either the best battery and fuel on the planet or an engine heater. Little late for any changes now.

If I hopped on my bike right *now*, I could make it in before anybody'd notice. Or I could work from my home office.

The Trifecta of Scary (cold, dark, traffic) wins again, my butt is staying here.
