Folks, PennDOT didn't reach out to us about this meeting and so we JUST found out about it this afternoon. If you live in Dormont, Mt. Lebo, Greentree, Beechview, Brookline, etc.. please try to attend this meeting to get your two cents in about bicycle and pedestrian issues.

West Liberty Avenue Improvement Project Begins July 12

PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists and residents work on a $7.3 million project to improve Route 3069 West Liberty Avenue in the City of Pittsburgh and the Borough of Dormont, Allegheny County, will begin July 12.


A public meeting will be held July 7 to inform the public about the project details, schedule, traffic restrictions and other impacts during construction.


What: Public meeting for the Route 3069 West Liberty Avenue Resurfacing Project

Where: Dormont Public Library, Keith Room, 2950 West Liberty Avenue

When: Wednesday, July 7, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Who: The meeting is open to everyone.


PennDOT and contractor representatives will be present to discuss concerns. The Lane Construction Corporation of Pittsburgh is the prime contractor.


The project will mill and resurface about 2.44 miles of West Liberty Avenue from Saw Mill Run Boulevard (Route 51) to McFarland Road (Route 3119) including minor base repairs, joint repairs, inlet and manhole improvements, improved delineation to clarify lane designations, new traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, ADA ramp and sidewalk improvements, and roadway excavation and reconstruction to remove old trolley tracks, cobble stone and slag/cement. Lane closures, detours and other traffic restrictions will occur. The project will conclude in late 2011.

I did get to this meeting, albeit a bit late (7:15p) so missed their introductory presentation. The main purpose was to air concerns about how the work would be done, traffic impacts, noise, etc. It was not about design.


I did ask about drain grates, and was told that bike-friendly drain grates are in the design plans.

I got an email today from the Dist. Exec. and he said they're going to be narrowing the travel lanes and enhancing the pedestrian infrastructure through there which should slow motor vehicle traffic. Given the traffic volume and off-peak parking, there was little that could be done to specifically address bicycling issues along this corridor.


Great to know that they're also putting in bike-friendly drain grates.
