stolen lights - a solution
i know this isn't the only solution and maybe not the best solution but i've heard of this a lot recently and this is what i do and its never failed me.
1. get a knog bullfrog light (not one of the dumb, useless, baby ones, i think they are sold at iron city but i might be wrong)
2. take your stem off your steerer tube (works for threaded and threadless)
3. put the stem through the hole in the rubber strap thing
4. put stem back on
5. fasten light on front over the stem connection to your bars
it takes like 3 minutes and a thief would have to take your bike apart to get it, and with the knog lights you don't have to take it off to change the batteries, so you only have to do it once. also, THE LIGHT IS PERFECTLY CENTERED (the reason i did this in the first place, because i'm a perfectionist) there may be other lights you can do this with, please post them if you do.

the clip mechanism on this particular light is a rubber circle meant to stretch around handlebars, if you put your stem through the hole and then clasp it like normal, but with the stem in the middle, you got a secure (they would have to break the light, or take your bike apart to get it) light thats perfectly centered

I suppose you'd be able to do the same with the seatpost, too.
I suppose the downside to that is that I have one set of lights I move between bikes, and I couldn't do that.

ya, i have tons of different lights laying around, but on my bikes i ride at night i put on permanent lights, also lookup reelights for permanently mounted lights, although they are not bright enough to be your only lights, its better than nothing and they never run out of batteries.

For those of us on a limited (read: zero) budget, what would anyone suggest for keeping the light on the bike? Sometimes popping it off to carry it around with me just isn't an option.
On one of my bikes, I wrapped about three feet of electrical tape around the thing. I suppose you could still get it off, but it'd be going a lot of damn trouble, and then be covered with icky-sticky. Probably isn't much protection, given that greed and stupidity are such close relatives.
Ideas, anyone?

Find a cheap handlebar mount (like, for a broken/stolen light that was designed to be easily detached...) of some kind in bike shop parts bin, and epoxy the light to it in such a way that battery compartment and switch are still accessible? It'd still be removable if the thief had the appropriate screwdriver to remove mount, but no longer vulnerable to casual theft.

ya i was going to say, put the light on its mount with a little gorilla glue on it... this type of thing gorilla glue it good for, it will expand like crazy and freeze it in there forever.

yeah, my problem isn't other cyclists, it's punk ass little kids that will just rip anything off your bike they can and then throw it in a bush or something. I need a light that comes with a live rattlesnake coiled around it.
