summer bike messenger jobs?

I was just wondering what the local bike messenger companies are and if any of you work for them and know if they're looking for summer hires.

I've never been a messenger before but I know the city really well and ride around in it a lot.

I imagine that the only company hiring is american expediting, and there you will make 100 dollars a

week. summer is a bad time to look for a job doing

something that people love doing during the summer

yeah, it's slow for the messengers these days anyway. too many fax machines. not to mention being the new kid sucks as no one will want you to make their money.

the kids that deliver food for jimmy johns downtown seem to be busy. i see them killing it everyday. that'd be a good place to start, or american expediting like steevo suggested.

good luck.

I remember when I first moved here in 94' bike messengers were everywhere all day long. I tried getting a messenger job back then myself, since I wasn't doing anything less lucrative being a college student at the time and it would have kept me in good shape.

Even back then when the bike messengers were everywhere it was pretty much impossible for me to get a job doing it and I went everywhere looking. I was in the best shape of my life, and quite fit compared to nowdays too.

Fax machines, email, and all of that pretty much killed it. I bet it is even hard to get a messenger job in NYC because of the probability of all the competition from anyone who's dream is to ride a freakin bike all day long LOL.

but it is the best job i've ever had. and the worst at the same time.

well thanks everyone for your help!

i saw that pedicab thing which would be cool but considering I am a 110 lb girl i doubt i'd be very good at toting other people around.

i don't know if these have them, but sometimes the pedicabs are electronic assist

Heather, my sister is a pedicab hack in Phoenix; she's probably not more than 120-130, and regularly hauls 600-700 pounds of drunk sports fans around after the games down there.

It's all about the gearing and working the inertia, from what I understand.

That would be fun so long as they are not too drunk and get motion sickness...

Drunk sports fans apparently tip *really* well.

Tip over, too, but that's a whole 'nother story.

This was funny:

"yeah, it's slow for the messengers these days anyway. too many fax machines."

A weed business with bicycle delivery would be much more lucrative than being a messenger!

Then people won't have to make a call to SAMPSON!!!
