The circle of influence

With all the negative posts lately I wanted to share something a little more positive.

I owned a bike for years and when I worked downtown I would ride it to work, once or twice a year but was your typical this excuse or that excuse cry baby who in reality just didn't want to ride their bike to work because it was too hard. I liked to mountain bike, but not ride to work.

I changed jobs over a year ago and started in January when there were a lot of bad ice and snow storms over the course of that week. When a lot of my co-workers were calling off because they couldn't drive down their street a few others were riding in on their bikes.

That was it, no more excuses. That spring I bought a cheap Trek hybrid and started riding to work. I haven't been the same since.

They influenced me to start riding and now I seemed to have influenced some friends to start riding as well. Seeing how happy I was and how much weight I dropped a few friends bought cheap bikes on Craigslist and have been riding constantly. They are slowly building up to commuting, but for now are just enjoying the trails and riding from Greenfield to the South Side for drinks or dinner.

I am sure that they will now influence more of their friends and they will start riding.

That's exactly how I got started, a guy I worked with at Pitt who commuted by bike every day (and still does, although in Davis now) got me into riding as well as a slew of other people. And hopefully I've helped a few others along the path...

I'll try to gloss over my 10 year hiatus from cycling, moving to the suburbs, etc... But I'm back in the city and riding again and at least occasionally commuting thanks to another co-worker and another old riding buddy who is now in Seattle who convinced me 10-15 miles commuting was at least possible. Most people in the office think I'm crazy but I know at least one guy is out looking at bikes...

So, I do think having some sort of support, comradery, etc. is important in getting people into biking, and it definitely feeds off itself.

does anyone know what's going on in that Pitt Bioemed tower in oakland (on 5th). i ride past it daily, and have seen a huge growth in bikes parked outside. there used to be like 2, that would lock to trees. when it got to about 5, upmc put in a small bike rack (kudos to them). recently, it's been up to like 13 or 14, like it was this morning.

just wondering, cause it could be the circle of influence you speak of

i should add that they're locking to trees again.

Erok,

I work in the biomed tower (BST3) and love that you guys got a bike rack put in. I would love more parking, especially someplace indoors (there are plenty of "empty spaces" for bike parking. Right now I rent one of the Pitt bike lockers 8 or so blocks away. At least one of my coworkers rides to work and parks pretty far away too. There just isn't anymore trees available most days!

I started a thread on this subject last week.

here's a really great resource that you should forward to any building manager

so, uh, what goes on in that building?

thats where they make the human-animal hybrids to combat the killer robots they are making at cmu.

but yeah, i remember when rsprake first got his commuter and i couldn't convince him to ride in until it was at least in the 60s in the morning. after one summer and fall of riding daily he rode in all winter this year and had no idea why he waited so long. and now he's ditching the hybrid and commuting via single speed every day.

i love seeing stuff like that happen.

erok: that building contains a few departments: center for vaccine research, my department - genomics and proteomics, and an animal facility (transgenics), that i am aware of.

i think it also has space reserved for federal emergency bioterrorism research since i believe it was built with some 'patriot act' money. fun fact: there is a sweet million-dollar airport-quality bomb/drug/butt sniffer machine inside the lobby that they probably never used once (actually, there are 2 of them).

we can get caitlin as an "expert witness" to testify for the safety of the trees

erok

I think 3/4 of those trees out there don't have a leaf on them (in the middle of July!). Pretty sure they're dead. I don't know if it is the bike locks rubbing the bark off, or the pounds and pounds of salt all winter long, but they no longer live.

i guess the salt would do more damage huh
