Things I Love About Pedal Pittsburgh

OK, I'll start. I got to ride a well designed, well marked route with fellow cyclists and supporters of Bike PGH! It was a picture-perfect day. I rode my bike all morning.

+1. Plus the bands and food trucks at the finish were cool.

It was a great way to introduce my mom to a new level of cycling with a ton of support and relative safety in numbers. She's only been seriously riding since last fall with a big break for the western ny winter and there's no way she would have gone for "you should come visit me and do the most physically challenging ride of your life on 25 miles of hilly Pittsburgh streets open to traffic". But she jumped at this with a bit of encouragement and killed it. She went right out and got a bunch of new cycling clothes and a car rack so she can go ride more challenging terrain than what we have within the nearly flat 30ish mile radius around my home town and is finally convinced she can handle car free commuting.

Gah! I was in town for Pedal PGH for the first time in years. Had a ticket, all registered. (I had bib #3!). So excited, it's one of my favorite rides since I see parts of Pittsburgh I rarely see on my own. Every time I discover something new that I come back and enjoy later. Then Sunday morning, the food poisoning hit. As a man once said: 'Nuff said. From what I'm hearing it was as awesome as ever, so I'll have to hope I'm in town for it next year.

The thing I like best about Pedal Pittsburgh is the community it creates that endures past the ride. Even though I work in Monroeville, there are people here who do the ride, and it's nice to have a way to relate to others in terms of biking, how their kids are doing, whether the training wheels are off, maybe next year they'll do the 25, and so on. It's an entirely different bike-related way for people to connect who normally don't think of themselves as cyclists. And that connection leads, of course, to sharing of advice, recommendations of routes and equipment, etc., that leads to more biking and a better bike community. Remember it was just last year that Bike Pittsburgh took over the ride -- it almost went away. Thanks for Scott, Erok, and the others at Bike Pittsburgh, as well as the many volunteers, for taking on the significant work and financial responsibility to make this ride continue to happen.

I loved how encouraging every person that passed me on every up-hill was. It certainly helped me get up Mt. Washington! I also loved the route, the views, the people and the food trucks!

Myddrin, there may be a stomach bug goin around. I missed the all neighborhoods ride because of it, and a few others at work have had something awful lately.

I've never had such a great time at a bike event - I will be going to PP every year for sure. It was so professionally organized, and the weather was excellent.
