Tippy Top, in parts

Hey all,

Due to some organizational problems we ended up splitting the Tippy Top ride in two. We'll be meeting up again, this next Sunday, at the Schenley Park visitor's center (near Phipps). We'll aim to leave at 9am, and hit the high point in Oakland/Schenley Heights/Upper Hill, and then over to the north side. It goes routes and place most cyclists haven't seen, so I think it will be worthwhile. Probably 20 miles, 2 climbs.

Yesterday, we got to the water tower in Grandview Park and measured the elevation at 1254' and then to Calvary Cemetery in Greenfield and measured at 1223'. I'd give those numbers a +/- of at least 25', but I think it's settled that Mt Washington is higher than Greenfield.

What happened yesterday was that we lost two riders off the back who ended up taking the wrong route. One ended up in difficulty, but they stuck together and so everything wrapped up fine. It could have been worse, but, with more communication &c, it could have been better.

I find the MapMyRide interface frustrating -- never quite finished annotating the ride. But here's the route as I had it sketched out a couple days ago: Tippy Top/MapMyRide

Update: a good ride was had by all, with hills climbed, views seen, and good cheer spread about.

Statistics: The Herron Hill Park reservoir measured at 1255', and shockingly, Allegheny Observatory in Riverview at 1240'. Riverview Park looks like it is not the highest point in Pittsburgh! Right now, it's either Schenley Heights/Upper Hill or Mount Washington (the Grandview Park water tower).

I don't know all the high spots in Mt Washington, so there might be something higher there, too. The search must continue.
