Friend of mine posted this on facebook. He’s a personal friend of the person attacked.

I suspect alcohol was involved… That’s as bike-friendly a neighborhood as you’ll find in the US.

Here’s the local discussion.

This is why I roll video every chance I get. Even walking from bike rack to building, the camera is on. You never know when you’re going to be the one with the crucial evidence.

Just to follow up, there is now a fundraiser page set up in case anyone wishes to contribute.

Sick! Always good to have a mirror. I am always watching what comes up behind me and if someone is that close, I am going to try and bail somewhere, knowing they are up to no good. I haven’t had any issues of any cars/trucks in many months. I am just really trying to avoid cars and take roads that are good for me and my safety. Don’t mind if the ride is longer. I just don’t trust anyone anymore at all. Texting and hate are no doubt a big problem. Wear a mirror and monitor everyone around you at all times and always have a bailout plan if at all possible.

@gg – What sort of mirror do you use? Handlebar? Helmet? I’ve never used one on the bicycle.

I just have a third eye. It is at most cycle shops for about $10.

On my commuter:

On my road bike:

I don’t ride without a mirror anymore. I also carry pepper spray in my jersey pocket. The mirror might have helped in this situation, sounds like the pepper spray not so much.

Had been considering either one of those brake-hood or a dropbar-end mirror — how stable is the one you’ve got?

I’ve had those ones that velcro around the end of a flat handlebar, which drooped or wobbled so much it was impossible to figure out what you were looking at; i’d be more interested in something that was actually stable enough to stay where i put it.

I have one installed in the end of my flat handlebars–it’s very stable. I’m surprised how much it’s helped my comfort level in relatively heavy or fast traffic (whether that increased comfort is merely illusory, I don’t know…).

They are both as solid as a rock. I’ve had the one on my mountain bike for 14 months now, no issues. My road bike mirror is going on 2 years, also no problems.

I’ve go this one http://www.amazon.com/Third-Eye-Bar-Bicycle-Mirror/dp/B001600YZ4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377529432&sr=8-3&keywords=bike+mirror, and it is stable and has good field of vision. Can’t imagine riding without.
