Finally, somebody who decided to wrap their politics in the bloody jersey. (and I truly mean that without any negative bias)
I am grateful to the Councilwoman for addressing the issue and for calling on the presumed next-Mayor to engage the topic. I’m hoping that others realize that Rudiak is presenting them with an opportunity.
I applaud this! I know that sometimes I forget that “Pittsburgh” is more than just the Downtown & triangle area, and that beyond the borders of the Southside & Northside, also should also be reached out for safer infrastructure and support for the bicycling and pedestrian community that lives there. Granted, we say “but there’s not that many people riding bikes there”, which I guess is because the safe infrastructure is not there to start with for people to ride more.
I saw Councilwoman Rudiak at the Ghost Bike installation on Tuesday, and are glad to see she is heeding on into action.
I bicycled up South 18th Street and out Brownsville Rd to Overbrook Blvd last night to attend a small memorial service for the cyclist who died in a collision with a car last week. Ms. Rudiak was there. Aside from the long climb from the South Side Flats, I did not find the trip difficult, or the streets any more dangerous than any other street in the city — either from traffic or passersby. That is not to say they are safe, but whatever measures are taken to improve street safety in the East End can just as easily be applied out this way, too.
It’s about bloody time. I’m not feeling very hopeful about anyone actually doing anything, though. It doesn’t even feel safe to ride on 25 mph streets anymore, because there is zero enforcement of speed, texting laws, or anything else, and there are zero consequences for drivers who mow people down and then blithely drive away. No wonder bad drivers are so self-righteous and entitled–our whole government apparatus is tacitly enabling them!
