Requesting your local expertise.

We're in the process of hunting down as many of the local public art murals that we can find. In our research, we found a photo of what looks like a mural of a cherry blossom tree in bloom. Unfortunately the person that took the photo didn't provide any information regarding where, precisely, they took it other than Pittsburgh. We think it might be somewhere on the Southside but so far we haven't found it. We're hoping that someone in this group has seen it and can give us an address - or at least narrow down the area to search. Thanks!

2012-08-18 20:32:17

Post the pic on here. I bet you a soda it will be id'd within 12 hours.

Here's the photo we found on line. Thanks.

Try contacting the Sprout Fund? They commission lots of murals.

2012-08-18 21:27:18

We dug up a list of Sprout Fund projects on line, but as far as we can tell this one isn't on it. Of course we've located several murals as we've ridden around that weren't on the list, but turned out to be theirs. If no one here can help then I'll follow up with your suggestion. Thanks.

2012-08-18 21:41:22

Ok let's go people I have a lot riding on this. Step it up.

Friend of mine says it's on Mt. Washington on the side of a barbershop. Don't have an address for you.

Sorry. Got it. 123 Shiloh Street, Pittsburgh, PA You can see the mural on Google maps.

Yep that is on mt washington next to parking lot for shiloh grill. At top of mon incline. It is a sproutfund mural. The artist wanted to recognize the regreening of the area with a native plant, instaed of showing industry.

Two hours, four minutes, from inquiry to exact address. This board rocks!

Also, this sounds like a wonderful project. You might ask the others on here to provide you with a list of the murals they are familiar with in various parts of town. Also look at the 500+ tags on the two Tag-o-Rama threads and Wheelset of Fortune thread for examples of murals.

2012-08-18 22:55:02

Wow! Thanks so much. This is great information. I'm working on compiling a list of all the murals we've found so far along with their location. Our rule's been that we have to bike to each one to get the photo and it's been a lot of fun so far. Give me some time to finish getting this a bit better organized and I'll post the information (or a link to it) so others can use it. Maybe once I do that anyone that knows of a mural we didn't find could provide the information so we can add it to the list.

2012-08-18 23:21:46

I should have bet more but I am a chickenshiite.

edmonds59
2012-08-18 23:37:00

In case you haven't found all these yet, this PDF has a few dozen of the older Sprout murals. And here's another site with some.

Cool project.

2012-08-18 23:44:45

Thanks, Steven. We did find those lists. I was surprised at how many of the Sprout Fund murals we've discovered that weren't on those!

2012-08-19 00:08:39

It took me a few minutes of looking at the picture before I figured out where that mural is. The funny thing is I'm friends with the owner of the tattoo/barber shop.

There seem to be a ton of murals on the north side and in easy liberty/home wood.

stefb
2012-08-19 09:09:58

There are, stefb. City of Asylum has several very interesting houses on Sampsonia and if you haven't seen "Randyland" on Jacksonia it's well worth a detour to look at.

2012-08-19 09:53:30

Randyland is incredible, I would like to see inside the compound.

How far out does your scope go? I know of a mural in Vista Business Park in Robinson, one of the most miserable places on earth, and the mural is lovely. Wanta pic?

edmonds59
2012-08-19 12:06:30

There are a couple of elephants painted on the side of a gas station on McKnight Rd in McCandless, about as unlikely a mural in as unlikely a place as I can think of.

stuinmccandless
2012-08-19 12:35:46

@edmonds59 I was inside Randyland a few weeks ago. I took my daughter over to see the outside, we walked around to look over the fence, found the gate open, peered inside, and Randy was working in his yard.

The yard is more amazing than the outside.

He's a very nice man. Invited us in, showed us different aspects of the place, told us about the history of the project and his thoughts. My daughter enjoyed it mightily.

2012-08-19 16:03:54

@edmonds59 Yes, please. I don't know if it'll be something we can easily ride to (from the Montour Trail maybe???) but we don't currently have any information on any in Robinson, so when you have a chance the address would be great.

@StuInMcCandless -- The elephant mural is one we were hoping to find. I don't remember seeing it before and wondered where exactly it was. The only place I could guess was by the station at the bottom of North Hills Village. I've been avoiding McKnightmare lately so I haven't had a chance to search. I'd appreciate knowing exactly where that one is.

2012-08-19 22:06:00

Inbound, just south of Perrymont. It's in McCandless, north of Peebles, where McIntyre Square is. Across McKnight from Vincentian Academy.

Again, incredible. I wish I could summon a fraction of that creativity and energy.

Anyway, the mural I mentioned, 201 Parkway West Business Park. I tried to get there with nice evening light, but it was already in shadow. I can get better.

Easiest way to get there by bike would be to West busway out to Carnegie then ride out Campbells Run Rd. If you want I could also get you directions to ride all the way.

edmonds59
2012-08-20 03:15:40

@StuInMcCandles Thanks! I know which station you're talking about now. Never noticed the mural!

@edmonds59. Wow - looks like a really nice one. Thanks for the info!

2012-08-20 04:26:01

Easiest way to get there by bike would be to West busway out to Carnegie then ride out Campbells Run Rd.

If you're going via bus + bike, either the 24 or 29 from downtown will take you to the opposite end of Campbells Run Road, which is much closer to the business park. (The 29 also runs past the Montour Trail a little farther out, at the Cliff Mine Road trailhead at MP 5.9.)

steven
2012-08-20 09:41:36

Campbells Run from that direction has a lot more sketchy intersections and crazy shoulder-less crap, much more harrowing. But if you did take the 24 or 29 bus, get off at Tidball to Glass Rd and there's a back road in. Even better.

edmonds59
2012-08-20 11:02:55

In the meantime, if you want to get to McKnight and Perrymont via something other than McKnight Rd, there are a couple ways to do it. Simplest is to put your bike on an O12 bus and get off at Perrymont.

By bike alone, there are a couple of ways to do it. The least complex: River trail to Millvale, up Babcock, R Thompson Run, to end, L Duncan, L Babcock, and as you approach McKnight, be in the right-most of three forward lanes, which will position you to cross McKnight rather than go down it. Cross McKnight, L into the little strip mall with the dry cleaner, the gas station, and the mural. All of this is relatively crappy, high-traffic, too-fast, tar-and-chip suburban roads, in essence 75% of anything with pavement outside city limits.

stuinmccandless
2012-08-20 13:11:57

Thanks, guys. These routes may be a bit beyond my current qualifications. I'm a novice on the roads so I'll be sure to do some reconnosance before I try anything.

@StuInMcCandles- is Thompson run open again all the way? I know that bridge was closed for quite a while, but haven't been by there lately. Also, I was actually toying with the idea of parking at the boat house in North Park and coming up Babcock from there. How dicey do you think that would be if I avoid rush hour?

2012-08-21 00:03:26

I honestly don't know about Thompson Run Rd; I don't use it all that often.

Babcock has several personalities. From Millvale up to the corner with Three Degree Road, it's quite tame, if you don't mind right-hand peel-offs where you have to negotiate being in the straight-ahead lane. I've never had a problem, but I do it so often it's second nature. (Just get out there, signal your intentions, be obvious about what you plan to do, and don't let the bastards get to you.)

From the Northway Car Wash up past Northway Mall, it's pure hell, and I never go that way. So's Three Degree, the other direction. I duck to the left of the car wash and take a rough trail through the woods for about a mile. Involves hopping a small stream, but much preferable to suburban Ross Twp traffic. Puts you on Perrymont.

Babcock from the McKnight/Perrymont corner, up to North Park, is busy but decent. A couple of small irritations: coming southbound, the shoulder varies from seven feet wide to 18 inches wide in a newly (2009) rebuilt section about a half mile beyond McKnight. Going northbound, someone got the bright idea to mill the outside edge of the road with those Sonic Nap Alert Pattern impressions. Between Passavant Hospital and North Park. Highly annoying.

From boat house to McKnight is quite a hike, three or four miles. If you want to just hide the car someplace, there are a couple of places much closer, such as TGI Friday's and other restaurants, on Corporate Drive, which peels off of and back onto Babcock right near McKnight.

Beyond North Park, Babcock is a reasonably pleasant country road, posted 35, not very hilly, but you will run into the redneck jagoff with some regularity, just as you might anywhere beyond a 15-mile radius of the city.

stuinmccandless
2012-08-21 02:45:39

Thanks, Stu. I was wondering about the Millvale-Babcock idea. Sounds like that's best left alone for the time being. Probably leave these murals for last and deal with the ones I think I can get to safely for now. We still have plenty around the city neighborhoods to hunt down.

2012-08-21 07:29:40

Let me know when you want to ride out here and we can take a trip out together. It takes me about 75 minutes to make the trip from the center of town.

I'm finally getting semi-organized. Mural photos that we've taken so far are now posted.

I have a list of what we have already found and photographed and another list with what we're aware of, but haven't gotten to yet. If anyone knows of any more murals that aren't on either of these lists and would like to give us the information we'll add it in.

I uploaded all of this to a FB page and it's not the best platform to display these lists. If anyone would like a more useable copy of the information we've accumulated so far, just let me know and I'll email it to you. Just keep in mind that this is a work in progress and although I think I have all the info (so far) it's not in any particular order yet (like by location or alphabetical).

Thanks again for your help to this point, and in advance for anything else you can tell us!

2012-08-22 02:39:27

Wow, you've got so many already! Very impressive.

I recommend a Google Docs spreadsheet for publicly displaying lists like that. Very convenient.

steven
2012-08-22 03:29:13

A couple I don't see on your list:

* Perrysville Ave just north of Perry Traditional Academy, facing south (new 2011)

* Perrysville at Vinceton, facing north (Sprout mural)

stuinmccandless
2012-08-22 06:49:40

Thanks, Stu. I've added those to our search list. This is turning into a much larger project than we first realized. We have 50 still left to ride to. Should keep us amused for several weeks. :)

2012-08-22 11:48:51

Some more:

-southside, carson & terminal way

-carrick, brownsville & east agnew (on building with state reps office)

marko82

That's a fantastic collection you have already. This city is rich with these things. Great project.

I just thought of another nice one in Carnegie.

edmonds59
2012-08-22 17:22:52

There is also a mural near the top of Brosville street, below the old terminal for the Knox Incline, and a mural on the daycare in Allentown, across from Alla Famiglia. The latter is by Lucas Stock, a seriously talented guy, as are many of the murals linked above. There is also one on Brownsville Road in Carrick on the side of this strange little building which I think is owned by a utility, between the Shop n Save and a mini-mart, near the top of Noble's Lane.

This is great stuff! We'll be looking for these things into next year at this rate. :)

@Marko82 - We have the Southside one; adding the Carrick one to the list. Thanks!

@Jacob McCrea - I'm not familiar with the streets in Mt Washington. Is the one on Brosville near where it intersects with E. Warrington?

Is the Lucas Stock one the one with a trolly car on it at 813 E Warrington?

I'm looking at a map of Carrick (again - not at all familiar with this area). Is that third one near the Southside Cemetery? Thanks for all the help!

@/Swalfoort - Nice one! Thanks.

2012-08-22 19:11:09

^Yes, yes (but check the address) and no. The one in Carrick is next to the grocery store on Brownsville Road. It is a mural of mountains next to an ocean.

2012-08-22 22:39:02

Chris, do you know the address or cross-streets?

vannever
2012-08-22 23:20:22

I took a ride on the 2 Mt Royal bus and found several.

* North Side, Cedar Av just S of EOhio facing W.

* Millvale, end of Meade St, just as you exit 28 outbound.

* Millvale, Attic Records.

* Millvale, church playground by Grant/North.

* Millvale Lanes has a small one.

* Sidelines Bar & Grill has a football themed mural.

* Sometimes it's hard to tell the diff btwn a mural & graffiti. e.g., Jesters Tavern in Etna.

* Etna, Small bldg next to ballfield has a mural. Might be tile.

Some of these are less public murals and more commercial advertising for whatever business it is. The Attic Records one, however, really stands out. Two of them, actually, and superbly done.

Also, I think Thompson Run Rd is open. I rode past both ends within the past two days and saw no orange signs.

stuinmccandless
2012-08-22 23:37:04

@Vannevar

Shady Dr E across from the police/fire station. 555 Washingon is the for the safety building. Walk to the Shady Dr E corner and you'll see it.

Ha! I see it's not on Google Streetview. The address above gets you there though. Apparently the alley next to the mural is listed as Parse St. on the map.

mayhew
2012-08-23 00:05:06

Have the first two, Stu, but none of the others. Thanks. We knew there were some in Millvale, but didn't have the specifics.

Glad to hear Thompson Run is open again. I haven't paid much attention the few times I've been through at that end of Babcock lately. If memory serves me, there would be more climbing on Thompson Run than if we went out Babcock. We're thinking maybe some Sunday morning might be the best time to attempt it - what do you think?

2012-08-23 00:09:32

If you have proper gearing, Thompson Run shouldn't be that difficult. You're following a stream, so you climb a natural valley.

If only all roads in the area could look like Babcock running north out of Millvale. Check my arrow picture on the Wheelset game for a good view of the wide shoulder [scroll down to 2nd photo]. The problem is what to do when you get to the corner by the car wash, and it becomes a four-lane, shoulder-less speedway with a high curb, on a hill, on a curve. [StreetView] There just isn't any good way to ride it, nor is there much of an alternative.

That said, if you want to ride out to the elephant mural, I'd be happy to meet you in Millvale, though this Sunday morning might not work since I will have out of town company.

stuinmccandless
2012-08-23 00:59:04

Stu, I know exactly what you're talking about on the stretch by the car wash.. I used to drive through there a lot and can't imagine attempting it with a bike.

2012-08-23 06:39:45

@srpit - Tomorrow/Sunday might work after all. My company was only overnight into this morning. It's next weekend that might be tougher to do.

stuinmccandless
2012-08-25 12:42:30

@StuInMcCandless - That sounds great! Would an 0630 departure from the Millvale Trailhead under the 40th St. bridge work? Is that too early? We could meet you by the gazebo.

2012-08-25 17:49:04

I'll set the alarm for 5, get underway by 5:45, meet you at the gazebo by 6:30. I'll send you a PM thru the board (ck upper right corner of page).

That Troy Hill one went up last Oct. A pair of really nice ladies have an orginization called Colorize Pittsburgh.

I helped them paint it. 2 days and I still have concrete primer on my samba's.

Good times.

Excellent, Jonathan K! Thank you! I'll add those to our list.

2012-08-26 21:42:09

stuinmccandless

anybody point out the Kaleidoscope Cafe on 43rd in Lawrenceville? They painted the building's outside to look like... well, a kaleidoscope. Not sure if that counts as a mural or advertising or just a beautiful paint job. I love it. Google Street View has the old cafe in that location with a boring paint job (I submitted a thing to try and get them to update Street View), but the current operators have a picture of part of it up on their home page: http://www.kaleidoscopepgh.com/index.html

I've not eaten there yet, but go past it all the time to get to the Ice House. Someone there bikes to work regularly too. My husband is in love with their build your own burgers.

2012-08-30 19:18:34

We did get the Kaleidoscope already, ejwme. Thanks for the suggestion though. Please keep 'em coming. I'm sure there are more that we don't already have on our list to hunt down. BTW, anyone know of another bride mural? Besides the really awesome one on Penn Ave I mean. I found something on line about it, but the address they gave doesn't exist. The web site said "Brighton Rd and McCollough St south of California". No such animal as "McCollough" St anywhere in the area as far as I can find. Help, anyone?

2012-08-30 20:52:20

I believe they refer to the lady who lives here

I found another large one that I don't see on your spreadsheet. In the Strip District, the top few floors of a large building have a large mural. Very easily seen from I-279 heading across the Vets Bridge. I don't know how you'd get it from bicycle level, unless you took the bike up an elevator to an upper floor of the Wholey Fish warehouse on Penn/Smallman/15th.

StreetView, from Vets Bridge approach, northbound.

stuinmccandless
2012-09-06 02:16:18

I think you're referring to "Welcome to the Strip", Stu. You can get a great view of it from the 16th St. Bridge - which is where I took this one from.

Is that it?

2012-09-06 17:01:16

We haven't made it to McKees Rocks yet, but I'm adding those two to the list. Thanks for all the inputs, Stu!

also a new one was just painted / is being painted under the 40th street bridge on the lawrenceville side.

hiddenvariable
2012-09-10 15:35:30

I've been watching that one under the 40th St Bridge. Very interesting. The design was done by someone at the Robotics place next door. It's a computer generated version of Doughboy Square and it's been fascinating to see it developing. When it's finished it's supposed to appear 3D when you look at it from a distance.

Have definitely seen the Devo helmet. Awesome to know he's a roboticist and artist.

Yet another one in Millvale, Redstone Ironworks. IIRC this is the shop (or one of them) that manufactures the 3 Rivers bike racks.

Farragut & Sedgwick, Millvale. Not on SV. (My 2nd pick for the tag the other day, but I went with the Knights of Equity monument.)

Thanks again, Stu. I'd forgotten about the Speakeasy one. Last time I drove past it was in pretty bad shape. Wonder if they'll fix it.

We did get the one above on the way back through Millvale that day. There was a pickup parked in front of it though so it was hard to get the whole thing in the photo.

On that one you mentioned in Sullivan field: I don't twitter and the only info I could dig up on line said they were painting the refreshment stand. Do you know if they're actually doing some sort of mural on it? Did they give a start date on the project?

2012-09-17 23:02:49

Do you have the '57 Chevy on Penn just inbound from the 16th Street Bridge? Easy to miss if you're not looking for it.

Also saw a painted fence in someone's yard up in the Hill, somewhere around Webster & Watt. Don't know if that's the sort of thing you're after, but it really stood out. I'll try to get a better bead on an address on my way home tonight. It's very close to the Sprout Fund mural on Wylie featuring the saxophone.

I'll see if I can detour through Etna on my way home, too. (I'm on the m/c, so can afford to travel a little easier, plus the weather is beautiful.)

No! We haven't heard anything regarding a Chevy on Penn! I'm thinking that we usually divert from Penn at or before the 16th St bridge so we probably wouldn't have found that for a long time. Thanks for keeping an eye out for us, Stu. we appreciate the help.

We did find a sort of mask design above a fence on Wylie about a block below "Listening Through Time" (the one with the sax). Could that be it? The photo we took is posted on the FB page.

FYI there are over 200 murals that we know about so far, and I think there are still a lot more.

@Steven - I don't think I ever told you that we really enjoyed the one you alerted us to in Homestead. What an interesting mural! Thanks.

2012-10-04 23:49:14

I didn't get back up into the Hill tonight, but did roll through Etna and got some pics of the tile mural I thought I saw.

Apologies for having the "other" bike in a photo on this board.

@srpit: Thanks! And thanks for taking a photo of it! I only saw it once in person, for a few seconds, so I was glad of the chance of another look.

There's a mural in Squirrel Hill on the side of the pet store at the corner of Nicholson and Murray Avenues. I think the simple design is replicated on the neighborhood welcome banners hanging from street lamp poles in the area.

I don't know if Braddock is too far for you (guess not, since you've got one in East Pittsburgh), but Pierce posted a mural photo on this page (a non-tag on a tag-o-rama page) that I didn't see on your list.

@Steven Glad the photo gave you a chance to really look at that one. There seems to be a LOT going on in it! I'd love to get the artist's story behind it. So far we've met or messaged with about 5 of the artists on some of the other murals. It's interesting to hear what they set out to show or say when they created them.

Funny that you mentioned it, but we made our first venture into Braddock yesterday and we did find that mural from the tag-o-rama page (but I like their photo of it better so I'll have to re-take it). We discovered quite a few murals there just sticking to the main street, but we plan to return to search more of the area. Someone there told us there were several "up by the mayor's house".

We'll hit that pet store next time we pass through Sq Hill - thanks! Another place we were yesterday, but we missed it. We started our "coffeeneuring" there and then went to see Jonawebb's wife's mural - which although it's deteriorating is very nice.

Appreciate all the help. Our list is getting long, but we know we've just scratched the surface. Who knew? The 'Burg is full of art!

2012-10-05 10:57:52

There is a new mural on the side of a building at the intersection of East Warrington and Beltzhoover Ave., which is the border of Allentown and Mt. Washington. I saw it last night but did not get a good look at it.

Thanks, Jacob. I'll add that location to our search list. We hadn't heard anything about this one.

Here's that colorful fence up in the Hill. On Webster, just east of Watt.

Haven't seen that one, Stu. Thanks!

2012-10-06 23:19:58

@Steven - We finally got back up to Squirrel Hill this morning and found the one on the pet store. Thanks! I'm not sure how we missed that one. I suppose we're usually heading down the hill there when we pass that way and just never looked back over our shoulders. Nice one!

Stu - do you happen to remember where in Etna that tile mural is?

2012-10-11 21:32:13

Right here. StreetView is pre-mural.

I'd like to thank everybody for their help identifying murals - and please keep 'em coming, we're always interested in another mural. This week our targets include the new one downtown, and the new mural at Sullivan Field in L-Ville.

But I'd like to ask you, if time permits, to please take a look at this Google map of murals in Braddock embedded in a blog post. It's a first-rough-draft and I'd appreciate any feedback/critique you'd care to offer before we build maps of the 200-ish murals we've got.

If you're going to take a look, bear this in mind: The idea is, we want to build maps for walking and biking tours of public art.

So please consider: Would this help you to do that? What else would you need? What else would help? A different format etc? We're still in the "blank slate" state.

Thanks in advance, Vannevar.

I'm not sure anyone ever got this one, mentioned in an earlier post. It's next to a gas station in Ross Twp, Perry Highway at Lindley Lane, across from H.P. Brandt Funeral Home. It's easy to miss because of the direction it's pointing as well as all the ads.

Nice, Stu! Thanks. I did have the info from your earlier post about one across from the funeral home and I apologize if I neglected to acknowledge that before. I did add it to our list. We just haven't gotten up there yet.

We've been mapping our rides to pick up clusters of murals in the same general location or direction. We're about out of those groups and will start going after the stragglers and lone murals soon.

Really appreciate all the help!

Here's the Center Avenue Slice one I told Vannevar about.

I find these by taking bus rides or toodling around on the motorcycle.

Just realized that the link I gave you to the spreadsheet wasn't working. I wanted to check something quickly, was on the iPad and remembered the link was there so I used it. Bummer. That information never updated. I don't know why. Here's the current link if anyone's interested in seeing what we actually have now. The ones highlighted in yellow are still ones we haven't gotten to yet.

I still need to update that list with the other door murals from the Oakland Door project that we picked up yesterday.

Thanks to everyone again for helping us with this.

Has anybody seen this on a building?

it comes from this blog post which is pretty cool, this photographer assembles 5x7-type photos and then builds a collage to get back to the big picture.

I haven't seen this one, if anybody knows where it's at I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

@Van have you checked the buildings near the food co-op? some of the background in that image looks kind of familiar.

No, but I will - thanks Paul!

We're still stuck on the western themed mural/graffiti that Van posted above. Anybody remember even seeing it? I'm wondering if it isn't behind a building somewhere (with the dumpsters in front of it). Any help narrowing down the area to look would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help.

i've seen that mural recently, its across the street from the east end food co-op, off of braddock ave, around the backside of the building.

I'm not sure how far out your project plans to extend, but I was driving through Irwin on US30 over the weekend and saw one. It is at the Pizza Hut, Lincoln Highway at Colony Drive [StreetView]. What my son noticed is that it is old enough to feature the Pizza Hut mascot, which they have not used in their marketing for a long time.

Thanks PBeaves, We found it there. Along with some other cool ones, which look the worse for the passing of time. Thanks Stu, that's a bit far out of range. So we think we'll have our GoogleMap of Murals online March15th. We've got over 350 murals and other items of outdoor artwork identified and mapped. Still working on the details Thanks to everybody for your help.

Um, we found the green faced lady, but the western gunslingers are still AWOL. We only know about this one from the photo Van found on line. I'd love to know if anyone here has ever seen it in real life? If so, recently? Neighborhood? Thanks, guys.

Hi edmonds59! (First, great to meet you at lunch on Friday) We finally got to this location, excellent mural, thank you for the lead! We road out there, from Walker's Mill on the Panhandle Trail, up to Crafton for a mural, back to Carnegie, then out Campbell's Run Road. Thanks for a great destination. Cheers, V.

Not a mural but a very cool window up at Macy's currently, on the Forbes side. I had to put it up somewhere;

I got a good look at this Macy's window a couple days ago. Don't know if you can tell, but the airborne cyclist is female. Much easier to see that, and the expression on her face, when you see it up close. It's one of the windows closer to Smithfield, on Forbes.
