Tag-o-Rama 3

This game is so popular that the Tag-o-rama 1 and Tag-o-rama 2 threads weren’t working right for some people, so it’s time for thread #3!

The rules are easy (although wordy, it is not hard to play)…

#1 – Find the tag and get a picture of your bike in the same location (as best as possible). The first person to post a found tag gets to place the next tag. If you get a tag, but somebody else posts their picture first, you lose – you’ve been Bruced.

#2 – Take the tag to a new location, shoot a photo with your bike in the picture, and post it here. Keep the tag within Pittsburgh city limits and the surrounding neighborhoods. Give a few hints (or a short poem if you’re so inclined) so the next person can figure out where the tag is located. Try to place the tags in interesting locations, somewhere historic, etc. Remember, the point of the game is not to make the clues difficult to figure out. It is about riding, not Googling.

#2a – After you pick up a Tag, a new tag must be placed within 36 hours. If the new tag is not set within the time limit, the first Bruced posted gets the tag. If no Bruce was claimed, tag will revert to the previous tag, and somebody else will get their chance. If you won’t have the time to drop off a new tag, don’t pick it up to begin with.

#2b – This rule is intended to keep the game moving. If the overdue tag is posted before somebody grabs the reverted tag, then the new tag will stand. However, giving the overdue tag-holder a load of crap is highly encouraged.

#3 – Tag must be findable – don’t make your tag so obscure that no one will find it. Make sure to let folks know what riding conditions are involved to get to your tag.

#4 – File photos are NOT permitted. You may not use a photo taken before the current tag was set to prove you found that tag, nor use a photo taken before you photographed the current tag to set a new tag.

#5 – All images of tags that are posted, whether picking up or setting a new tag, MUST include the bike you rode to the tag. If your bike isn’t in the posted image, you don’t have a tag.

#6 The bicycle in the picture must get to the tag location under the player’s own pedal-power.

#7 – No whining.

Example part 1 (Horatio drops a tag):

If you have a History of finding tags, have a Field day and make this one your Goal!

Example part 2 (Ted picks up the tag):

Goalpost outside the Heinz History Center

Now the real tag:

On the street of ladies
I saw this castle true;
and if you spring into action
a hill awaits you

Well, I know where it isn’t. I wonder how close I was when I took this pic in the drain grates thread.

I’d say you were pretty close.

This is fascinating! Who built this? How old is it? How long did it take them? I feel compelled to ask Rick Sebak to put this in a WQED special.

@stu: pretty close!

@rustyred, I believe Rick has covered this in one of his shows. I’m not sure which one though, maybe the neighborhood one. I’ll have to do some googling…

Well, as the rules state, it’s about riding, not Googling. I didn’t have time to look this morning, just a quick sweep of the street, and nothing jumped out at me. Pawing around on StreetView doesn’t give me any great ideas, either, but hey, it’s still daylight, so maybe I can give it another whirl, and expand the radius a bit.

@stu, I’m gooling for the Rick connection, not the location. I’m pretty sure I know where this is – but don’t plan on picking it up unless everones stumped.

I’m all about the Googling.

Damas St, near Homer St, Spring Hill. Took me a half hour to find this place even after biking up to the steps at Homer & Diana Streets.

Good job Stu! This in fact is in a Rick Sebak piece called “North Side Story” @ 37:20 according to this log http://www.wqed.org/education/pghist/logs/northside.php

Unfortunately I couldnt find (free) video.

Wow! Thanks! Just requested the DVD from the library; I don’t need much of an excuse to watch a Rick Sebak special.

Nice pickup, Stu! RustyRed, let us know what you discover.

New tag. Gonna give you a choice here. Bonus Internet points if you get both, but at least get one. Getting the first one can be a bit chancy. The guy who works here in the morning is a mean SOB.

Now I just need to learn how to hold a camera steady.

Further hint on the second one: The “Full” sign might be the case for cars, but there are other modes of travel which this place accommodates, and there was plenty of space at 9:03 am when I took the picture.

What, is this “get your fellow cyclist killed” now?

Is the next tag is gonna be in the lion cage at PPG?

Oh man. Eff Interpark.

so, who wants to join a “park-in” at interpark?

Parking garage at Cherry and Fourth, looking across 3rd ave.

Third Ave Parking Garage, near PPG.

Surprised no other downtown worker beat me to these. I’ll bring my real camera to set the next tag!

Yay Ted!

For the record, I find it interesting that one parking garage has gone out of its way to make life difficult for cyclists, while another has gone out of its way to make life easier for cyclists.

I regularly enter the Pgh Parking Auth garage off of 4th Ave, since I usually enter Downtown via 6th St and Market Square. It’s a bit of a walk from my office at Forbes and Grant, but much more likely to have a secure lockup than the toaster rack at City-County Bldg.

It was really nice to be able to lock my bike to that solid railing behind the taped up sign, when you could still park at the 4th/Cherry garage.

Stu has been setting a lot of tags lately;
I bet he could have made a better clue too.

I know exactly where this one is. Good thing for @edmonds59 that I’ll be out of town for a couple of days.

@pinky and a couple others are fairly close to this one, too.

Better Maid (Pink House) Donuts, 1178 Steuben, Crafton Heights. Always worth the climb. W/ @fultonco

Sorry, been busy; ted reminded me earlier today, but work had internet problems. In fact, I took the picture this weekend, but just forgot to upload…

Keeping the sweet-things theme–you can’t buy anything here, but one of Pittsburgh’s favorite confections is made here.

DVD just came in today. The retaining wall was build by a baker in the 1930’s and it took him 3 years to build it. Looks pretty good for an 80 year old wall built by someone with no stonemasonry skills!

What’s a ‘3 day tag’?

Pierce

3-tag-day

Three pickups and three drops? of tags in a single day

How many times has it happened participants?

TeamDecaf

^ I’m not sure how many times, but I thought this tag would be so easy that it could start a quick turn around.
