Weird Thing You Saw on Your Morning Commutes

One use for my dash cam is to record anything of interest on my commutes. Today I saw a jet-powered [sic] truck and a dog riding in it.

Technically it's Irvine Street at Greenfield Avenue; Second is over to the right on the other side of the bridge. But yes.

I don't know how weird it is, but I did manage to capture a car-on-car interaction behind me on my way in this morning. I might not have noticed except that I heard the horn behind me, and it didn't sound like it was directed at me. It wasn't. Video link.

Car on car interaction sounds too tittilating  for this message board

This should be in the "Road Conditions" thread, but since it was from yesterday and the flood was already gone today, I thought I'll put it here instead. Joncaire St flood, 5/2/2017 - but there was little rain yesterday - isn't it strange?

First time seeing a Uber robot car on the Boundary St. I was wondering if Uber robot cars can pass cyclists safely on a two-lane road like this. This road is a major artery for cyclists accessing the Eliza Furnace Trail, but many motorized vehicles use it to bypass the traffic on the 5th Ave. Because of the lack of shoulder, motorists MUST cross the double yellow lines to pass cyclists (according to PA laws) but many failed to do so. REF: http://iamtraffic.org/engineer…/crossing-double-yellow-line/ http://www.ncsl.org/…/transp…/safely-passing-bicyclists.aspx

Interesting. I'd been wondering the same thing for a while, and finally had one overtake me on S Aiken St back in February. It did cross the yellow line to do so (about halfway across the line) to give me the necessary clearance. I wonder if the driver took over.

How can Boundry St. be used as a bypass for 5th Ave.? It becomes S Neville St. at Filmore St. and dead ends after the trail entrance.

Cars use it to get to 2nd Ave and then zoom onto the parkway over to the Southside vs waiting on a backed up fifth Ave in Oakland. It turns into a path but it is wide enough for a car and rarely patrolled by police.

Also, people go down Neville/Boundary, then up Joncaire to reach South Oakland, in particular Bates St., which in turn connects to Blvd of the Allies, 376, and Second Ave. (I have no idea if that's actually faster than Fifth, but if you think you're stuck in traffic, it might seem so.)

^at a certain (high enough) rank, the military used to give you a shipping container to move your household to your new duty station.  They don't care what's inside. Or maybe the car has profound sentimental value...

ah. military is a pretty good possible explanation. was confused why someone would bother to ship a honda accord

Biking down Kentucky Ave for years I'd see a car with Puerto Rico plates and occasionally one with Alaska plates.

It costs less than $1000 to ship a Honda from HI to LA.  If you are not going back any time soon, it might be preferable to selling one car and buying another.

Caught a glimpse of the 100 cyclists for the "Second Annual 335 Miles for Veterans" on my way to work today. The ride is organized by the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania, Inc. (VLP), who aims to to provide essential housing, employment, and vital supportive services to eligible local Veterans, service members, and their families with the goal of improving their self-sufficiency, sustainability, and quality of life. http://www.vlpwpa.org

Yes, they are planning to arrive on 4th. But it seems like they also have another group starting tomorrow who are planning to do around 100 miles per day and arrive on 4th as well: http://www.vlpwpa.org/335milesforveterans/

It's rare enough to see any woman or girl on a skateboard, regardless of clothing style. Not even 1 in 20, more like 1 in 50, and I think that's being generous.

Point State Park: A bike, adapted with a 'point-of-reference' tennis ball (generally, actors interact with a tennis ball in lieu of a character that might be CGI'ed in at a later time or a reference for an actor that's in the scene but cannot make it to the set) for the TV series "Gone"   http://imgur.com/OkbfxF1   http://www.post-gazette.com/ae/tv-radio/2017/02/01/TV-series-Gone-Kit-Kick-Lannigan-to-film-in-Pittsburgh-this-spring-Kim-Moses/stories/201702010258 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6621102/

It's taken about a month, but the skeleton bike on the Station Square trail (mentioned 8/2) is now completely gone except for the ulock.

it looks like someone put the u-lock right underneath the handlebars (right?), so it was only a matter of time before someone just unscrewed the handle bars and took the bike.

Cedar Avenue at East Ohio Street traffic was bunged up for several changes of the light but no obvious problem, e.g., no wrecked cars visible. No, East Ohio was closed off for movie filming. I gave up and jumped on the sidewalk. A pedestrian walking toward town from AGH had made better time getting to EOhio than I did.

That's an expensive fire when the li batteries burn up. Also for $1k you figure someone in their PR department would know "it's" vs "its" :) You can get a pretty decent bike for $1k and ride it in any weather.

@RustyRed I was just in point state park around 530 pm. Saw a dude on a big wheel. Is this your guy? (Sorry for the Twitter link but I'm too tired to upload this to my website and then link the photo so it appears in line) https://mobile.twitter.com/uncoolPGHdad/status/1005232887266979841/photo/1   Edit: Looking at it on a laptop screen instead of my tiny phone looks like the same guy -- same black gloves, same helmet, same black top. Just different pants.
