Wheelset of Fortune – take 3
Play Wheelset of Fortune! You don’t need to be fast or ride long distances. Everyone is welcome to join in. It isn’t difficult – just adds a little spice to your ride or maybe offers a little motivation to ride on a day when you need a bit of a push.
The old thread was malfunctioning a bit, so we’re starting a new one here. I’ve done a copy and paste of the rules previously posted and made a few small edits:
This is a game that’s all about riding to places and taking pictures. It’s similar to Tag-O-Rama, but there’s no riddle to work out and speed is not necessary. It’s an inclusive game where many bicyclists post images of the tag instead of only the first individual to get there.
It works like this:
Each round lasts about 1 week in the warmer months and maybe a bit longer when it’s cold and icy. At the start of a round, you get tag instructions from two tag-setters. Each tag-setter will name a location or create a theme for the round.
Examples of themes and locations include:
-Your bike in front of your favorite mural
-Your bike at a high vantage point
-A photo with your bike in which symmetry is present
-Your bike with a deciduous tree, or forest thereof, in its autumnal glory!
(-Your bike with whatever the tag setter defines for that round)
Find a place/object that fits the theme and take a photo of your bike there. Then post the photo in this thread.
When the round ends, the tag-setters randomly choose new setters from the list of people who posted a photo in that round.
Let’s say Albert and Becky each set a tag in round 7. Becky, Chuck, Darla, and Ed find Albert’s tag. Darla and Frank find Becky’s tag. After the last tag for the round expires, one of the tag-setters (say Albert) makes a list like this:
The tag-setter then goes to http://www.random.org (or equivalent) and uses the random number generator to pick two random numbers from 1 to 6. If both numbers refer to the same person, pick the second again. Let’s say 2 and 3 come up. Then Chuck and Darla are the new Setters, and each posts a new location and time, using the format below. The new round ends when the last photo expires.
To set a tag, you can just describe the place, or post a link to a map, or post a photo of your bike there. But it should be easy to find even for people new to town. This game is not about interpreting clues, just about riding to interesting places.

Stu and Rusty Red – you’re up. Please set your tags and the end date here. :)
Feet, any kind… human, animal or a reproduction (other than your own).
Tag #2: Holes! Potholes, holes in fences, knot holes in trees, a hole-in-the-wall store, something that merely looks like a hole. Apply whatever imaginative or wack-o idea crosses your mind!
Inspiration: A sinkhole opened up along McKnight Road a little while ago, swallowing a car. [link]
This round closes at 23:59 on Tuesday, August 19.
In my holes photo above, zoom in on the person just to the right of the business end of the backhoe. You’ll see it is a photographer with a huge tripod in one hand and a camera in the other. Turns out he was with the Post-Gazette, and the afternoon online edition of the paper (named the Pittsburgh Press) showed me taking this picture, or about to.
I looked for a link. Sorry. Wednesday’s “Press”, page 3. No paper version. I’m wearing a yellow shirt and you can see the bike in the distance, leaning against a rail, to the right of the truck.
Meanwhile, I have an idea for a “feet” picture.
Here is my “hole” tag…… decorative lifesaver ring along Lake Michigan in Wisconsin
And for feet, well, these llamas were up on hind legs, boxing it out just a moment before this photo was taken.
Sauk Trail, Sheboygan County, WI
Tag #2 – Holes: I guess this counts as holes. What’s interesting is that this ongoing construction has disrupted a bike lane along the road, which some of the time gets completely ignored and some of the time gets decently detoured, seemingly at random.
^^Those would be the hooves of “Triggeramus”, Stu.
Ding, Ding, Ding!
Round is up!
Using the random.org site, (as I got to it first), we come up with the new tag setters:
Winning the “feet” tag is:
Winning the “holes” tag, with her photo of LOTS of holes, is:
Feel free to set the next tag, and the second person to set their tag will set the closing time for the round (23:59 on the day one week following the setting of the tag)
With respect to this past weekend’s all-neighborhood ride, and Sundays Pedal-Pgh ride which will hit multiple neighborhoods, how about a picture of your bike at a border. It can be a neighborhood border, a flowerbed border, or a Border’s book store (are they still in business?). Just go find a border of some type. I’ll let Jeg set the end date.
New Tag #2 – Punny
Inspiration: I saw this while riding around this week and found it hilarious.
Round ends at 23:59 EST on Wednesday, August 27th 2014.
(P.S. I’m so glad this game is back! :) )
this is a political border:
It’s also the current tag-o-rama target. Hey, Stu did it. So can I. Except I won’t give you the location.
Tag #1 – Borders:
Well, former borders. Plaque marking the location of the Berlin Wall from 1961-1989.
Tag #1 Borders
They told me that this ride was going to cross the Mason-Dixon Line. So cross it I did.
Time’s up, close your test books and put down your pencils.
In this round, entrants for tag #1 (borders) were:
1 – Ahlir
2 – Stu
3 – jeg
4 – srpit
6 – smarchit
9 – RustyRed
Entrants for tag #2 (puns) were:
5 – srpit
7 – Stu
8 – Rusty Red
Spinning the wheelset of fortune, I get 3 and 4, so jeg and srpit get to choose the next tags. Second one to post gets to choose the end time, typically 23:59 of the day corresponding to this one next week.
I searched for a Surf shop in order to knock out both of last weeks tags in one shot (board-er… a pun, har har har); I guess we’re too far from the ocean though. :p
@Drew — could have checked out one of the new paddleBOARDER locations in town.!
I missed the deadline with my downloads. Flickr no longer working for me, and I have not yet mastered IMGUR.
I just upload to the site. Use that little icon above.
OK… Labor Day weekend is approaching. Traditionally the pools close now, so how about “pool”. Doesn’t need to be the swimming variety, but that’ll work.
Also in honor of Labor Day (but not where I am!), New Tag #2 – people working.
Round ends at 23:59 EST on Friday, September 5th 2014.
Tag #1 – Pools
Last outdoor pool swim of the season today. Thanks to the cool and rainy weather, hardly anyone was there and I had a whole lane to myself (which is really uncommon around here)!
(No bikes allowed in the actual pool, which is on the other side of that wall and looks like this: http://www.berlinerbaeder.de/uploads/pics/Humboldthain_04.jpg)
P.S., thanks @stuinmccandless, I had no idea about the direct image upload feature.
If I was thinking, I would have thrown my bike behind that sign (just took a photo b/c I thought it was interesting) and I could have claimed it as the labor tag… seeing as labor (mining) caused the issue that is now being dealt with. Oh well, the hunt continues. Anyways, a lovely area to ride with a mountainbike. If you’re ever driving on US22 into Altoona, you can see the area above the train tracks on the left, as you head down the mountain.
