Trail Condition - South Side Trail

Hi All - I'm posting under my husband's log in...figure everyone here would be my best source of info! I'm training for the Pittsburgh Marathon and planning on running the South Side Trail this weekend (starting off of Carson) - can anyone provide me with an update on the trail conditions? I know Pittsburgh isn't exactly known for it's stellar trail maintenance! Thanks!

PS - I'm not one of those runners that runs three wide across the whole width of the trail oblivious to all around me :)

I'm kind of surprised no one has answered...so I'll give it a shot even though my info is a few days out of date.

So starting from the Hot Metal Bridge, here is my report. Heading towards the sandcastle side: I have no idea. :)

Towards the southside, the entrance near 26th/25th street is pretty snowy. I tried to head down it a couple of weeks ago, got about 50ft and had to turn around. I'm not sure where that blockage ends... however on Wednesday I can report that the trail from near the Terminal building to 9th street seemed to be very clear. (I had to turn there so I didn't follow it any further, but as far as I could see it looked Ok-ish.)

Hope this helps and that you get a report on between 9th and 25th streets.

I ride the other side of the river: Jail Trail/Eliza Furnace Trail. I have seen quite a few joggers on it in recent days. As a cyclist with non-knobby tires, I've found it to be pretty easygoing except for the ramps and entrances leading up to the wider paved parts. I'm not sure how much this will reflect the conditions on the other side of the river, through.

I'm one of several volunteers updating the @pghtrails Twitter feed. I'll file a report if I'm out and see something noteworthy, but we're hardly full-time trail condition professionals doing this, so it might be hit or miss.

Check it out: http://twitter.com/#!/pghtrails

This is probably too late, but here goes: The South Side Trail towards Sandcastle is snow-covered but okay for running. Looks like it's been cleared recently but not in the past two days. Be careful, though, there's some icy spots and holes.

I ran it this morning as part of a larger Schenley Park/Frick Park/Duck Hollow/South Side Trail/Greenfield loop, and it was beautiful! Better running conditions than the past few weeks, but still snowy enough in places to really slow you down.
