I know JFK was assassinated 50 years ago today, yup conspiracy. More importantly, 7 months ago today, my 8 year old son, Iain was hit, while riding his bike. It was a lone driver, no complicated physics, she just didn't see this kid. On a sunny Spring day, by Frick Park, on Reynolds, she turned left into him at Lexington. She didn't even know she hit him and had to be flagged down by Iain's father, pounding on the window and screaming, like Jackie O, scrambling over the back of the car...Oops, it happens. Iain was critically injured. The first police we talked to were Homicide. She may have gotten a "failure to yield" violation, but we don't know yet, as we still have not received the police report! I was doing the BikePGH Art Ride, and another cyclist suggested the community might like to know. THE best part is: Iain is doing great. He still has his sense of humor, is a wonderful child, can make it through a full day of Third Grade. If you ask him, he will tell you he usually aces spelling tests, but every once in awhile misses a math question. He still has permanent double vision, but his young brain has adapted and he can read above his grade level and site read music (that's a little more difficult). He takes piano lessons. He will need a major eye operation in February, but that won't fix the vision completely. He has a bit of an out-turned leg, which hopefully will improve with yoga. He runs and plays, though needs to avoid the chance of a head bonk until next Summer, when he will be back on is bike! He is deaf in the left ear, but "has two." Today we walked to school and a little kid asked, "what happened to your eye?" (The eyes are in a weird position). Iain replied, "Oh, that's a long story." A bad story, with a better-than-expected happy ending. My front page headline for this historic day: "Seven months later, to the day, Iain, a super kid, hit by a car, is an amazing kid with a happy, healthy family."
