US Steel Bldg - Dahntahn

I may be taking a job in the US Steel building depending on how things work out within the next month or so, which will be awesome in part because I could commit to commuting by bike several days a week. I think I saw a bike rack in the parking garage when I parked there for the interview -- does anyone know how that works? Do you have to pay the same rate as cars? Any other places to check out for parking?

Plenty of free places to park in downtown. I'm guessing a bike rack under the Steel Bldg would likely be free. There's a downtown map on this page Resources-> Bike Parking (about halfway down the page) There are also some locker arrangements. Some $, < < < < than car parking. I'm sure others more knowledgable will chime in.

The building's parking garage has a few levels, with "hanging" bike racks on two levels - the bottom one and the third from the bottom. There is no charge. You just bring your bike in through the sliding entrance door and either take the elevator to that level/floor, or take the stairs down. The racks fill up quickly in the summer, especially when people rudely use the racks as long-term storage, to the detriment of legit bike commuters. I don't know if building management cracked down on that or not, but it was a minor problem a while ago. The rack outside on the patio isn't bad at all. It is monitored by a camera, which in turn is monitored by a live security guard, or so I've been told, and for what that's worth. I see much nicer bikes than what I ride to work parked there regularly. A final word to the wise: if you lock up the bike in the building somewhere other than on a bike rack you may be ticketed. A while ago some idiot locked his bike to the fence in front of one of the prime parking spaces, which are leased by some corporate CEO or the like. No less than 2 perfectly clear signs told this idiot not to put his bike or anything else there. Nevertheless he did and was fined $50 by building management.

I park in the Steel Building. Get there early as the racks fill. If you are stuck, check with your company and see if you can park it in your work area. Security will let you take it up the freight elevator. I did this when I forgot my lock once. If you cannot lock it on rack in the parking garage, go back upstairs to security and let them know. They are pretty good about alternatives. Listen to them. The consequences of ignoring them isn't worth it. Many of us leave a lock at the racks to save one thing from dragging to work.

I know this is an old thread, but does anybody know if the bike parking is still free and how to access the racks in the morning? I think the sliding doors have been replaced with the rotating ones.
