wheel building

Can anyone in the area make spokes and build crazy nonstandard wheels?

I have some rusty moped wheels (roughly 26"x2") that I need to rebuild. I can handle polishing the hubs and rechroming the rims, but I know nothing about wheel building. I want to upgrade to stainless spokes if possible; the old ones are steel/chrome and very hard to come by anyway.

Thanks,

Jon

there's an internet group with a branch in Pgh:

The Moped Army, google it. They're a great resource for everything moped related.

thanks, i'm already following a lead from there, but nothing local. are there no local shops that do custom wheel work for bicycles?

I've always been told Scooter that used to work at Dirty Harry's is the best wheel builder in the area. He's moved on to another local bike shop, I forget where. You could call Dirty Harry's and ask. 412-828-2667

Scooter is now at Top Gear out in Wexford.

He's a hell of a wheelbuilder.

West Liberty Schwinn and TRM both have spoke cutters. However, they only handle 1.8 and 2mm spokes so I'm not sure if that will work for you or not.

i'll have to check mine. they don't look bigger than 2mm, so that might work. thanks again.

I'm not sure If your looking for spokes or not, I have a Workmans bicycle, It's an industrial factory bike and the spokes are real fat, definitely work on a moped, not sure exactly how big, they have a factory direct store: http://worksmancycles.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/index.html

thanks, timito! i'll check out the workmans spokes. the bike is a '57 lambretta, and the wheels are a lot more like bicycle wheels than moped wheels, so none of the moped stuff has been any help so far (that's why i'm bugging you guys).

If you have any pictures, I'd be interested in having a look.

That's pretty cool. For something with a motor.

If you have to go with a heavier spoke, you might have some luck with someplace that builds dirt bike wheels. I'll see if I can think of someplace. Otherwise, there has to be someplace you can order the exact, custom spokes, it shouldn't be that uncommon.

I'm pretty sure J and B importers (a wholesale distributor) sells heavier gauge spokes.

I built up a set of moped hubs for someone a few years ago, onto heavy duty MTB rims.

I used DT 2.0 straight guage spokes, and DT brass wahsers to take up the gap in size between the spokes and the holes. I was a little worried before building, but after I as done I was confident those wheels could stand up to the punishment of a gasoline engine.
