Winning Mass Transit

Found this, thought I'd share: http://www.mnn.com/green-tech/transportation/blogs/5-ways-to-make-public-transit-awesome

Some interesting ideas about how our mass transit systems shouldn't be one-idea-fits-all, and user friendliness.

Retweeted. I'm connected to a bunch of transit folks on Twitter @bus15237.

The 4th picture especially! Someone please get a truckload of dirt and a bag of grass seed and just do this, OK?

Yeah, I thought it was awesome... but someone will have to mow it. Maybe there's short growing varieties, or the travel of the cars will keep things down, but then what happens when the stray maple tree takes root...

I still think it's an idea that is just missing from our state's discussions on mass transit. Make it psychologically competitive, make it desirable not just in bus routes and times but in ambiance, and it will actually get used.

But when the option is to stand in the freezing dark beside a sidewalk-less pseudo highway for 45 minutes to catch a bus that was 5 miles out of your way to begin with and doesn't drop you within a mile of your destination, that's just not going to happen for the majority of people.
