World carfree day is today

... and I didn't even know about it until a friend of mine living in Brussels reported the entire city is closed to cars today, 9am to 7pm. Busses are still running and all public transit is free. http://www.worldcarfree.net/ http://www.brussels.be/artdet.cfm/5547 So, when are we going to do this in Pittsburgh?

Crap....and I have errands to do that require the car! Thanks for letting us know. Is it always 9/22? Maybe we can plan for next year!

I would be happy enough if we got started with car-free week-ends in neighborhood shopping districts... How about Penn in the Strip on Saturdays? Get rid of the drivers who insist on speeding through there; it's a real danger for pedestrians. Who could possibly object? And let transient vendors set up in the street (instead of the sidewalks). Murray between Forbes and Phillips (or Forward)? Walnut between Aiken and Shady? And that's just spots off the top of my head [since I live thereabouts]. What's Mayor Peduto's position on this?
