Year Round Urban Farming

Not cycling related, but since I know a lot of the people on here are "green" I figured this would be a good place to ask.

A client of mine is looking to start a sustainable year-round urban farm model to spread to underprivileged urban areas (non-profit co-op).

He has land and he has capital--he just needs people.

He is also looking for people with experience in alternative energy.

If you are interesting in talking about the project with him, PM me your contact info, and I will pass it on.

I have a small garden in my backyard and I'm involved in a neighborhood gardening club (greenfield garden club, GGC).

Last month we had a guest looking to expand his worm composting farm from rural Ohio to Pittsburgh. His vision was to have lots of compost collecting bikes, some warehouses where the worms lived, and pedal powered harvesting mechanisms. It sounded pretty neat. His name is Matt Peters. It seems like he has a lot of experience in eco/green/alternative energy/composting, but lacks space in the city and money. Could be a good connection for your client, depending on where he is.

We (the GGC) are meeting on the evening of the 28th to tour the Hazelwood Gardens ( http://hazelwoodharvest.org/ ) which sounds like the urban farming thing you are looking for. They use abandoned property and kids from the community to grow food for people who need it. You should invite your client to tag along. Let me know if you want the details.

That is interesting because my client is working with a worm farmer who works with alternative energy and composting right now. I didn't know there was that many worm farmers around.

Do you have Matt Peter's contact info?

I PMed you his email address.

I am an amateur worm farmer myself! I have a plastic box in my basement home to what I imagine is a thousand or so worms. They eat all our vegetable and fruit peels/scraps.

If anyone wants to start their own and needs a handful of worms, let me know. I have more than enough to share.

Nick, you might want to tell him to check out Pittsburgh Garden Experiment (google the meetup group), and contact Jeff Newman. He's trying to farm in Braddock Hills, and is very clued in to the urban farming scene that is budding around here.

I'm interested in finding out more, and will pass the word on my blog if you like. I'd love to bag my job and join the movement, but I've got a mortgage. So I farm vicariously through others and count the days. June 2012.
