THE YEAR IN REVIEW

It has been an incredibly busy and successful year at Bike Pittsburgh, and we want to take a few paragraphs to review our accomplishments in the past twelve months.

* We grew our Membership to over 200 people and our email list to nearly 1000 people.

* We received a grant for Public Art Bike Racks from the Sprout Fund, and have completed the design, scouting of locations, and manufacturing of prototypes. We are currently working with the City of Pittsburgh to finalize some of the last points regarding installation and maintenance, etc. We will be able to provide almost 20 more racks that are unique to Pittsburgh with this grant. Additionally, we are working with another agency to see if we can combine our efforts and install perhaps 50 more of these same racks with monies that they have received from a similar grant.

* Free Ride joined Bike Pittsburgh this year, enabling both groups to grow stronger and reach even more people than was previously possible as separate organizations.

* Bike Pittsburgh participated in a half-dozen Safety Day events in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Helmet Coalition. At these events we helped to fit and give away hundreds of free bike helmets, and educate young cyclists and their parents about properly fitting and wearing bike helmets.

* We helped to organize and coordinate Bike To Work Week events this year, and hope to have an even bigger and better showing this coming May for Bike To Work Week 2004.

* Bike Pittsburgh led dozens of bike trips for The Western Pennsylvania Field Institute. During these trips, we taught cyclists how to properly and safely ride in traffic, basic bike safety, and reached hundreds of people who were thinking about biking more.

* Successfully lobbied the City of Pittsburgh to install more bike lanes in Pittsburgh. Progress on bike lane installation will continue once the City’s budget crisis has been resolved.

* We have maintained our close ties and partnerships with organizations such as The Western Pennsylvania Wheelmen (www.wpwbikeclub.org), The Western Pennsylvania Field Institute (www.wpfi.org), The Pittsburgh Helmet Coalition (www.pghhelmetcoalition.org), The City of Pittsburgh (www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us), The Port Authority of Allegheny County (www.ridegold.com), The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (www.downtownpittsburgh.com), Sustainable Pittsburgh (www.sustainablepittsburgh.org), Friends Of The Riverfront (www.friendsoftheriverfront.org), The Sprout Fund (www.sproutfund.org), The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (www.spc9.org), and The Thunderhead Alliance (www.thunderheadalliance.org). This is just a partial listing…

Finally, and most importantly, people like you have helped us to be successful. A strong and committed constituency is the greatest asset that we have, and we have been making great progress. Thanks to all of you who have helped us this past year. If you have not already joined Bike Pittsburgh, it’s not too late to make a tax-deductible contribution before the end of the year! Simply go to the “Become A Member!” section of the Bike Pittsburgh website.

Happy and safe cycling in 2004!

FREE RIDE’S NEW HOME

On December 20th, about 20 Volunteers braved the sub-freezing temperatures to help Free Ride – Pittsburgh’s recycled bicycle program – move in to their new digs in the Construction Junction warehouse. The new space is at least twice as big as the previous location. Volunteers are busy building lofts for parts, mounting stringers on walls for hanging bikes, sorting parts, and organizing the new space. Photos of the move and space were taken, and if available in digital format will be posted on the website. Be sure to check out the Free Ride section of the Bike Pittsburgh website for more information on this great program. Free Ride is now located within the Construction Junction warehouse at 214 North Lexington Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15208 (Point Breeze) just off Penn Avenue – very close to The Frick and The East End Food Co-op.

Thanks to all of the Volunteers who helped make the move so successful! You are part of a strong and growing community of cyclists that are helping to make Pittsburgh a better place to bike!

PITT STOPS

This section of The Bike Pittsburgh Leader is dedicated to identifying local establishments that have made a committment to cyclists.

This Issue’s Pitt Stop is: Highmark (Downtown) – Highmark recently installed bike racks Downtown at the corner of Stanwix and Penn Avenue; the racks are protected (somewhat) from the elements. Our hat is off to Highmark for providing parking spaces for some of their employees who are regular commuters!

Post the miles that you ride on the Bike Pittsburgh website in the Community & Classifieds area! Just send us your monthly mileage, and if you want your name to be available as an email link to: miles@bike-pgh.org
