HOUSE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE APPROVES TEA-21 RENEWAL BILL

On March 24th, the House Infrastructure and Transportation Committee approved H.R. 3550 – otherwise known as TEA-21 – for another six years. This bill provides over 275 billion dollars in Federal funding for highway, bridge, transit, and safety programs.

Funding from this legislation will help to drive infrastructure improvements here in the Pittsburgh Region, but it is important to note that bike and pedestrian provisions account for less than 1 percent of the overall package – about $275 million dollars. Local and Regional advocacy organizations like Bike Pittsburgh as well as national advocacy organizations have been continually lobbying our legislators to ensure that bike and pedestrian funding remain in the reauthorization. For those of you who wish to understand more about TEA-21, there are two excellent online resources for tracking and understanding TEA-21 legislation: (www.tea3.org) and (www.transact.org).

BIKE TO WORK WEEK MAY 14TH THROUGH 21ST

Bike To Work Week 2004 is coming up soon! Bike Pittsburgh is busy planning a series of events for this week. If you’ve never biked to work before, and are interested in trying, we can help you!

To start with, our Free Ride shop will be open extra hours the week prior to Bike To Work Week. Bring your bike down and we’ll show you how to tune it up. Need a bike? Free Ride can help you get a great recycled bike into your hands for less than you think (for free, if you’re willing to volunteer a bit around the shop as a work-trade arrangement). We’ll be leading rides into Downtown from various point around Pittsburgh. The complete list of events and details will be posted shortly on the Bike Pittsburgh website.

BIKE PITTSBURGH MEET ‘N GREET REPORT

Last month, Bike Pittsburgh hosted our 2nd Annual Meet ‘n Greet in our new Free Ride shop. Cyclists of all kinds – mountain bikers, road riders, recreationists, messengers, and commuters – all mingled into the wee hours of the morning. Several local bands kept the late evening lively. Great food and drinks for an estimated 250 attendees were served until we ran out.

A videographer recorded the evening and is putting together a great mini-documentary. We’re planning on putting excerpts on the Bike Pittsburgh website soon. More details will be available as we reach the final edit.

Thanks to everyone who came out and joined us!
