BIKE PITTSBURGH WORKING GROUPS START WORKING

Bike Pittsburgh asked people to sign up to offer their energies and expertise to help carry out the big task of bicycle advocacy ahead of us at the ‘Meet ‘n Greet’ in February. The working groups are as follows: Free Ride!, Bike Rack Proliferation, Bike to Work Week, Bike/Auto Co-Existence, Pittsburgh Helmet Coalition, Regional Infrastructure, Grant Writing, Fundraiser Rides”The Leader” Newsletter, Media/PR, and Commuter Magazine.

Work has already begun with several of these groups. The Regional Infrastructure working group started meeting in April. Eight Volunteers gathered to share ideas about how to best go about accommodating for bicyclists on Pittsburgh’s streets and how to go about making it happen. Each person agreed to research the various topics for which we needed more background before an informed decision can be made. In the meantime, Bike Pittsburgh’s Scott Bricker is working with Friends of the Riverfront (http://www.FriendsOfTheRiverfront.org) to create a map that includes recommended bicycle commuting routes throughout the city. Scott will work closely with this working group to devise a plan when he recommends particular routes for the map. The working group will be able to offer insight and ideas into how other cities have provided for bicyclists. Our goal is to create a comprehensive plan that includes these recommended commuting routes, Pittsburgh’s Bicycling Plan, and best practices found in other cities as well as original ideas that might be uniquely appropriate for bicycling in Pittsburgh. Once a plan is established, Bike Pittsburgh will work to carry it out.

If you think you could be of help with any of these Working Groups please sign up and work to make this happen. Questions and requests to sign up can be sent to: (info@Bike-Pgh.org).

COMMUTER ROUTES SURVEY – PLEASE ANSWER!

Bike Pittsburgh and Friends of the Riverfront (http://www.FriendsOfTheRiverfront.org) are working on a new Commuter Map for Pittsburgh, and we need your help! If you commute in Pittsburgh, please answer the following questions:

1. Where do you live?
2. Where do you typically ride your bike (besides parks)?
3. What routes do you take to get there?
4. What obstacles/tricky parts exist, if any, on your routes?
5. What other info would you like to see on the commuting map?

Please email your responses to Scott Bricker at: (scott@Bike-Pgh.org) as soon as possible! We are working on a tight deadline! Thanks for your help!

BIKE ACCIDENT SURVEY – PLEASE ANSWER!

As you may or may not know, Pittsburgh can be extraordinarily tough on cyclists. Injuries, near misses, potholes, and unfortunately, deaths, seem all too frequent. What are we to do? Stop biking? That is not the answer. As cyclists, if there are dangerous areas – we need to know. We are collecting as much data about various incidents in Pittsburgh with the intent to map it and hopefully see if a pattern emerges. This would serve two issues…

1. As a resource to bikers to identify dangerous areas around town, and,
2. as a potential tool to present to policy makers arguing the troublesome spots around town.

Cyclists’ safety is the main concern; please spread the word. A very short survey can be found on the Home Page of: http://www.Bike-Pgh.org.

KISKI VALLEY FAT TIRE FANATICS: STILL GROWING

The Kiski Valley Fat Tire Fanatics (http://www.kiskivalleyag.org/FTF.htm) are now in their second year. This Mountain Bike Club for youths is based out of Leechburg, PA, just a little northeast of Pittsburgh. Group President, Gene Nacey reports that club members had already done trail maintenance at least twice by the end of April; a photo of some hard working kids can be seen in the Community & Classifieds section of the Bike Pittsburgh website.

The Fat Tire Fanatics website now features a cool map of Watershed Premier Trail at Roaring Run (http://www.kiskivalleyag.org/Web_Pages/FTF_Stuff/WatershedPremiere_Web/WatershedPremiereTrail.htm). Just click on the bike icons on the map to get information.

Gene is looking for adult leaders to help lead many of this season’s rides. You can get more information on the Fat Tire Fanatics by visiting their website, or contacting Gene via email at: (gene@kiskivalleyag.org).
