Yes, even if you always bike to work

By Ngani Ndimbie, communications manager

I bike commuted in Pittsburgh for 4 years before joining the staff at Bike Pittsburgh and not once had I participated in the Bike to Work Day celebration. “What’s the big, fat deal?” I thought. “I bike to work everyday.”

I was so, so wrong.

Bike to Work Day is officially my favorite Bike Pittsburgh event. The energy is infectious – it’s great to suddenly be surrounded by so many other people who like to bike.

Here are 5 reasons to join us at one of 5 pop-up Commuter Cafés.

Bike Pittsburgh pop-up Commuter Cafés will be run from 7:30am – 9:30am and can be found at the following locations:

DOWNTOWN Market Square, 15222
SOUTH SIDE Hot Metal St & Water St, 15203
NORTHSIDE Roberto Clemente Statue, 15212
OAKLAND Schenley Plaza, 15213
BLOOMFIELD Friendship Parklet, 15224

1. Because You Want a New Bike(!!!) or One of 20 Other Amazing Prizes.

Thanks to our friends at Marin Bikes one lucky member will ride away from a Commuter Café with a golden ticket redeemable for a Marin Muir Woods in your chosen size which retails at $769. Every Bike Pittsburgh member will receive a FREE pair of BikePGH branded hater blockers (ok, sunglasses). In all, 21 members will be especially lucky and get a Golden Ticket prize like a Rapha water bottle or a ModCloth goodie bag.

2. Because You’re an Everyday Rider.

To the everyday rider: I’m like you. I personally bike to work because I’m too cheap to drive and too lazy to go to the gym. We at BikePGH are here for that. We’re here to celebrate your penny pinching and sloth. Or your environmentalism. Doesn’t matter. Come get your prize: free coffee, free food, good people, and the brand new Pittsburgh Bike Map.

3. Because You’re Bike Commuting For the First Time.

To the first-timer: There’s no better day to give biking to work a try. You’re likely to have a blast and we’re really excited to be a part of it. To boot, your participation reminds us here at Bike Pittsburgh of why we do this work and, better still, you invite us to think back our triumphant first bike commutes. Can’t wait to high-five you at a Commuter Café.

4. Because Heathy Ride is FREE!
HealthyRide_FreeRideDay2016
In celebration of their first National Bike to Work Day (the fleet launched two weeks after Bike to Work Day last year), Healthy Ride will be offering FREE rides all day long. I’d recommend becoming a registered user in advance to save yourself a little time on #BTWD.

5. Because FREE FOOD. FREE COFFEE. FREE BIKE MAP.

For every bicyclist. I want to reiterate that it doesn’t matter who you are, we want to celebrate every person who pedals on Friday, May 20th – so join us at a Commuter Café!
