I've noticed the same bike. At first I thought the owner took the seat so it wouldn't be stolen. Then I realized that doesn't happen in real life.

I got on the elevator downtown yesterday with someone who was carrying their bike seat. Their explanation was that it was easier to remove the seat for the day than it was to remove the wedge pack of tools that was attached under the seat. So yes, an theft deterrent move, but not exactly what you were implying, I think.

I took my seat off one day in 2004, early in my career of bike commuting. By the time I finished worrying about the grease etc. on the seat post, I decided it was just better to leave it on, and I haven't had any problems since.

I remove my seat when I'm at school. apparently AIP is notorious for stolen bike parts, as evidenced by a couple half-bikes that are locked up to the bike racks...

The seat is back on the bike as of this afternoon. Odd.

If your bike has a quick release on the seat, just replace it with a bolt. The ability to quickly change your seat height is highly unnecesary, compared to getting it set at the right height in the first place, or the possibility of losing the seat to a nuisance theft.

They originally appeared on mtn bikes, but even most of those have discarded that feature.

QR on mountain bikes was handy so you could have your seat high as you climb up the mountain, then lower it for the downhill run, to keep your center of mass low, and far back. I usually carry a tool around anyway for mechanical issues, so raising and lowering the seat without QR is a non-issue.

I was in a hurry yesterday, and thought I must be seeing things, then didn't get a chance to check after work. Now, as of this afternoon, one day later, said bike is gone. It was "parked" there, I'd say, at least three months.

Perhaps it was only parked when you were there.

I saw the same bike for a long time, everyday, locked to a sign. Then one day when I wasn't working, I saw someone unlock it and go about their business. Seems they go to work before me and get out after me.

I would pass it at all hours. 7am, lunch, 6pm, 10pm. It didn't look like it was just parked there for the day.

...same here, and, since I took note of it, there has never been a time that it wasn't there (until yesterday).

However, Bikelove seems to have solved the mystery. I couldn't fathom storing my bike at the stop sign on the corner, so the possibility never entered my mind... "frequent parking", yes, "where you keep your bike", no.

There was no question in my mind that it was abandoned - I even picked it up to see if I could read the serial number.

I saw that this morning. I admit, I'm generally puzzled. This isn't the place that I'd pick to store my bike long-term. If it were, then having the seat disappear would discourage me. If the owner were taking the seat away, then why did it reappear? It's kind of like bad locking meets performance art.
