Annual naked-ride-protest for cyclist's rights on the road in Mexico City

Over the weekend, Mexico City held its own naked-ride-protest for cyclist's rights on the road.

The video is in spanish, but it pretty much talks about how over a 100 cyclists rode through Avenida Reforma (one of the major through-fares on the city) in protest, . This is the 5th year they have done this. One of organizers mentioned that this year alone, about five ghost-bikes have been installed so far to commemorate cyclists killed on the road -the most recent a 23 year old artist woman on May 15.

There are various people in different levels of nudity, so FYI that this video is at-best PG-13!

They mentioned that similar rides happened in around 145 cities around the globe....

Man.... while I know that Mexico City is a huge-ass city, 5-ghost bikes so far this year is WAY too much for me....

How about a "Donate to Bike-PGH Or the Clothes Come Off" ride?

If I'd finished mowing the grass a bit earlier yesterday, I was going to doff the shirt, put on my short shorts, and take a lane of McKnight Road for the 3 miles from Perrymont down to the lower Babcock Blvd peel-off. If I'd had someone to paint a "Can You See Me NOW?" on my back, that would have been even better.

+1 joe

If you can figure out how to get us and a couple of bikes to Philly, I'll gladly join you.

Well.... why go to Philly? Why not here in Pittsburgh?

I personally wouldn't go all-out either, but riding with a swimsuit? Hell yeah!!

Body Paint = +1

The way I see it, whether I'm wearing the baggiest clothes or the tightest form fitting lycra, my body is the same. I'll show up with the Speedo :P

I have a car for 4 and a rack for 2.

@joe: My rack is pretty impressive too (although I've lost weight), which is why I refuse to doff my shirt for an NBR.

@stefb A ride like this is not about how good one looks with minimal clothing, but about showing drivers that when we ride our bikes, we have nothing to protect us except for our helmets. It is only our wits and our bodies out on the road with them driving tons of lethal steel!

Going to Philly would be cool, but I'm sure a ride like here in Pittsburgh would benefit too. If enough people are interested about doing our own ride here in Pittsburgh, I'm game!

And regarding whatever the legals are on what we can get away with (not) wearing, if Philly can do it, Pgh can do it. It's the same state laws in effect both places. I don't know how Philly got away with all they did (in 2009--I haven't seen this year's pix), but somehow they did.

We had some police at some sketchy intersections, and we had to meet at a closed off area before the ride for briefings. We had a fully enclosed tent for body painting, which was great for those less comfortable with full nudity. I didn't talk to any of the organizers, but they had everything very much under control, and they had this in the works for a very long time, all signed off by the city.
