Bath Time Bike Ride!

Friday, September 27th 6:30 on the Hot Metal bridge I want to see the giant bath toy being dropped into the river. Dress in fun bath things (and clothes, or a swim suit if you don't care about temperature) and ride a leisurely pace around the trails until we see it. Interested?

In, and I'm trying to figure out a creative way of bringing my duckies with me.

I plan on tooling around the area and taking photos... I wonder if they inflate the duck or launch it?

I'm trying to come up with the safest way to wear a bath towel...

New version of bumper-bike, involving a kiddie-pool filled with rubber duckies.

I was thinking clawfoot bathtub on a trailer, laden with duckies and suds.

Urrgh, I just read that the Duck's exact arrival time is top secret, but will come up the Ohio 'sometime before nightfall'. Feh.

I think a slow ride starting at 6:30, swinging around the point, and ending on the other side should work - figuring it gets dark pretty early. Maybe a stop at giant eagle for picnic food? And we can just set up and eat while we wait? Blankets! (Thoughts?)

Actually there's a bridge party - that would probably be more interesting...

FYI Thinking instead of trails, Carson to Smithfield, then through convention center to the trail... That way our bath gear can be seen along the way! And we don't inundate the trail... Thoughts?

Carson is OK with me. Concern: Getting stuck in traffic. Would like the option to bug out and take Muriel or one of the other parallel streets if we get stuck.

Change in plans: Start promptly at 6, ride down Carson, then across Smithfield bridge and to the convention center. From there we will jump on the trail and head to the point, or to wherever we can see the duck. There's a bridge party too! So we can end there.

If you're coming, make sure you get all your ducks in a row...

So does anyone happen to have eyes on the duck? It must be somewhere.

At our office, we have a nice view of anything going under the WE Bridge and we're waiting impatiently for any signs of any large Yellow Anatidae. I rode down the trail past Brunot island and Western Penitentiary this morning and saw no sign of preparations.

My hunch is that it will be covered in a tarp prior to 6, so what you want to look for is a large "thing", potentially duck-shaped.

I want to make a duckie playlist. I only have a small Jambox... but it will do for the people close to me on the ride. I just can't seem to come up with enough Duck songs that aren't for kids. Help!

While I won't be able to ride in from the South Side, if anyone sees me (I'll be on a purple granny bike with yarn-bombed basket and Pirates helmet) en route please feel free to wave.

Wow, the bridge was crowded! I gave up and went to dinner with hubby. Got a chance to see it towed up the the bridge though.

A couple of little helmet-cam videos: At river's edge by the 6th St (Clemente) Bridge (link). From the 7th St (Warhol) Bridge (link). @Marko82 shows up at about the one-minute mark in both.

Do they hide it at night? I went past there around 8:30 but did not see it. I rode all the way from Point State Park to 9th Street. No duck.

I was tipped off at work that it's actually a Trojan Duck! Turns out that the duck is full of *gasp* Clevelanders *shudder* and that they come out of the duck at night!

It's kind of ironic that there's all this hoopla about a large plastic duck given our extermination of actual waterfowl around here: http://humaneoptionspittsburgh.org/?page_id=37 But then again, our relationship with nonhumans is a never ending source of irony
