Car-Free Calculator statistics

As the year comes to a close, it would be interesting to see some breakdown on the usage the http://car-free.bike-pgh.org website got. I only backfit my rides starting May 1 to the site, and only yesterday hit 1,000 miles. Even so, I've noticed that I've held pretty close to 1% of the community's total miles traveled, all year. I wonder how many others are in "the 1%", or pretty close to it.

As I type, the grand total is 111158.09 miles, so if 1% of that is 1,111 miles, anyone over 1,000 miles (.9% of total) is pretty close.

i've done less riding this year than i have in a long time. i bet i'm in the 99%

Where do those of us who are in the top ten calculate to?

I never finished logging mine before I took a break. I should do that soon.

Here's few calculator facts.

The Top 10 account for just about a third of all miles logged.

The top 3 have logged more than 5,000 miles individually, which gives them each the distinction of logging about 5% of the total miles for the region.

We now have over 475 subscribers. That triggered a new raffle. The winner to be announced in the new year.

The vast majority of subscribers only log their miles occasionally, many not at all. We've been pretty happy with the results for the first year. We're really appreciative of the people that have participated. It's one of the few metrics of this type for the region. If all goes well the updates we have planned will be significant.

Lou, if the caculator tool was easier to use we might have more participation. I usually only update one a month or so, so entering the data is "click" and time intensive. And no, I will probably never enter it daily, and I'm sure others wont either. But at least it give us some numbers to show at meetings, etc.

My about once-a-week routine goes like this:

* Start Excel and make a quick list of all the little bitty trips I made

* Log into mapmyride.com. Bring up the list of rides I saved and sort them by distance.

* Most of the riding I do I've done before (home to West View, home to Northway Mall, home to the parking garage on Smithfield, etc.)

* Look up the snippet in the list, add the number to the spreadsheet

* If I have a new route, map it out on MapMyRide and save it, and add the number to the spreadsheet

* Sum the day's bits

* click over to the calculator and enter the day's result

It sounds like a lot of work, but it isn't. The only difficult part is entering and saving new routes, and that's more tedious than difficult.

@ Marko

The upgrades will make it much less cumbersome. I'll withhold the details until our plans for the Spring are confirmed . . . but it will be a lot more fun and less time consuming.

I'm with marko, and looking forward to I the changes. I enter my miles every week or two, but enter daily totals (aside from some backfill where I consolidated)... just having next/prev day buttons on the entry screen would speed things up considerably for me.

I don't think I'm at 1000 miles but I only enter commuting miles in the CFC. My total for the year is still way less than I was aiming for though - I don't think I'll break 1500 unless I go for a long ride this weekend. Pretty sad considering I logged almost 500 mi in one month from mid-may to mid-june.

I am a little under 500 miles short of 5k for the year (not all commuting miles). I haven't ridden in at least a month. I could have made it, too! Maybe in 2013.

What helped me fill in a lot of blanks was my habit of sending a tweet when I was on my way to somewhere by bus or bike. By going back through my Twitter feed, I was able to reconstruct a lot of little trips I'd forgotten about.

For some reason I am unable to access the top 10. Anyone else in a similar situation, or have any ideas on what the problem may be?

When you go to the top 10 it takes a few minutes to pop up. I'll click on it and after about 4-5 min. It'll pop up.

I just signed up, try to start doing this in '12. My hope is to really ramp up my game in the new year, '11 made a little progress, but I'm feeling it, the little pilot light of desire.

Top 10 doesn't show up for me either.

I took Mr. M's advice- clicked on it, went to do something else and when I came back, it was up.

The ten 10 does take a long time to load and the more data it has to sort increases the wait.

@ salty just add your utilitarian miles for now. The next iteration should have the ability to track and distinguish all of your riding miles.

Ok so I had like 800 miles since august that I never logged. Now up to date.

stefb
2011-12-23 23:13:22

I tried to cheat and enter my monthly miles on the beginning of each month, apparently the daily limit is 60 miles...

That's pretty low, especially for brevet riders like reddan.

These are miles on a bike that would replace driving miles, I thought. If it counted all riding, I would be close to 5k

stefb
2011-12-28 20:47:50

Oh. Hmm.

Then again, I used to race cars on the weekend (pretty sure you'd all excommunicate me if I told you all how many mpg my weekend car gets), so biking has essentially replaced my leisure miles. ;)

I will edit accordingly.

I had the same impression as stefb- otherwise I would start logging a lot more. I suppose unless you did long automobile drives on weekends and then started to ride them.
