Saw this. I think maybe she shouldn't have been watching her computer in a paceline, though that's not her real point.

Control is a big issue with cyclists' fears, for sure. I think this is why so many cyclists use taillights but not headlights -- because they feel in control of what happens in front of them and not at all in control of what happens behind them, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

absolutely. it takes a good deal of work to convince people that headlights are, if anything, even more important than tail lights. it seems counterintuitive.

When someone mentions "serious cyclists," then starts telling tales of pacelines, computers, stop-fekking-watches, and other sports paraphenalia, they lose me rapidly.

As far as I know, those of us that grocery shop with bikes (the very definition of "serious biking" as far as I'm concerned) don't think of stopping when they have an accident. People don't give up their cars when they have accidents either. Pedestrians dont' give up walking.

A lot of it is in the head. Possibly most of it. It's more the bruised ego than the bruised hip. However you felt about cycling before the incident, nothing really changes except the focus.

When I wrecked in January, I knew I was testing the limits, cycling in the snow, in the dark. I just wasn't expecting to wreck quite that way. It was my own stupid fault. I knew I would ride again. Getting back on was a mere matter of letting enough time pass that I knew I was physically able to do it without reinjury.

If I quit doing things every time I got hurt I wouldn't do very much at all.
