OT: Old Dodge Dealer on Baum Blvd

Going past the old Dodge Dealer on Baum I noticed a Zoning Hearing announcement on the door. Looking on the Zoning Board's website I came across this pdf (page 7) with the mention of a grocery store. Anybody heard anything on this?

Market District expansion? Whole Foods moving? (Rumor had it Whole Foods was going to build a new building across the street from the current but could they be re-thinking?) Or a new grocery store?

I wish some of those food trucks (like they have in portland or over by pitt + cmu) would set up in the east end -- mellon park maybe? the other day i rode right up to the little take-out window at conflict kitchen and bought a hot meal. it was kind of nice.

[threadjack for food reviews] The Conflict Kitchen does serve good food. Current theme is Afghanistan: 4 different filled flatbreads. It's supposed to promote dialog about the place the US is in conflict with, so it was kind of funny that when I asked the server what she thought about the war, she said she was completely neutral & thought it was a negative financial investment for the US.

Um.

But, the food was very good and inexpensive & the take out window is just the right height that you can roll right up and order/eat without even dismounting!

RE Portland street food. Freakin' amazing. Hard to go wrong.

pittsburgh is sorely lacking in hipster food trucks

also, aldi's owns trader joe's. FYI.

welll... the way I understand it is that a family trust of the Aldi owners owns TJ's. Same difference, I guess.

There is a reason we lack hipster food trucks--it's much harder to get one going in Pittsburgh compared to other cities. I've worked with two different parties trying to start food trucks, and both decided to go other directions.

Nick, do you mean harder because of regulations/ the city gov't not being welcoming/accommodating, or that Pittsburgh is somehow inherently difficult to make a go of the food truck thing in?

Mostly ACHD.

BottomShelf Foods is an incredibly unappealing name for a grocery store.

how about "market outlet?"

just kidding, I love kml.

My dad used to shop at a place called "Overwaitea". I asked him where the name came from. He told me they took the name because it's like their 5kg bag of apples is really 6kg, it's "over weight" so you get more for your money. I've never been able to think of it that way, and he still calls it that even though I think "Save on More" is the new name.

BottomDollar sounds a lot better than BottomShelf. Reminds me of the days when generic was in black and white packaging.

I loved the black and white generic packaging before private labels came around.

Aldi offered themselves to the hill, but they

would rather have no grocery store than bag

their own groceries. Ill take the aldi.

those b&w generic labels remind me of repo man and roseanne.

KML is going out of business, but some other ultra-low end place has opened up across from Wholey's (very briefly a club called Ludic; before that, Have a Nice Day Cafe, and 100 years ago a church). FYI.

Oh, and we live around the corner from the Sharp Edge: Aldi will make 3 supermarkets within a 7 minute walk, with Bottom Dollar and TJ's and the Shakespeare Giant Eagle making 3 more within a 7 minute bike ride. Kind of crazy.

Kml's been out of business, if I remember correctly. They changed their name to "market outlet" and moved over to where Ludic was. They'll always be KML to me, though.
