Shimano mountain rear dérailleurs that work with road shifters?

I'm trying basically to replicate the new SRAM Apex group but with Shimano components. I have Shimano road brake/shift levers, a compact crank, an Ultegra front dérailleur, and a 10 speed cassette that runs from 11 to 32. The trick is, what long cage Shimano rear dérailleur can I put together? It looks like the Shadow XT rear (at least the latest 2010) model will not work with road brifters, only mountain-style rapid fire, which is annoying. I would be happy using anything like a Deore XT (which is what I have on my commuter with road levers) but I'm just not sure of the compatibility. Thoughts or advice?

What information do you have that says the Shadow XT is not compatible with road shifters?

Dude this should totally work with 9 speed, but I think you might have some issues with 10.

I think your best option might be to run a 105 10

speed rear derailer, and do the math to check the

maximum teeth that you are allowed to have and make

your compact a super compact and maybe put a like a

48 or something on the big end.

This is why you should be using friction bar-end shifters, as God intended.

I kid.

Doesn't Shimano sell a mid or long cage rear mech for road bikes? There are plenty of bikes out there that come stock with a triple up front.

Yeah, I am pretty sure it's only the DynaSys stuff that is not compatible.

You should be able to take any MTB long cage or one of the road long cage and make your project work.

You could also take one of the "two by" double MTB cranks and get a nice setup. Wide gearing, low ranges. I have an FSA Afterburner with 39/27 on it.

The long cage road derailleurs from Shimano top out at a recommeneded 28 teeth. You can certainly use a 10 speed XTR rear with road shifters-I've seen that done.

Thanks for all the advice. I was planning on having a 48-34 in the front, so it seems like, with careful shifting and no crazy chain crossing, I could get away with a GS long cage road RD in the back, like Ultegra GS, even though that is specced for a max of 27 teeth.
