South Side trail to the Waterfront?

Looking at some google maps views of the South Side trail, it looks like it stops before the Waterfront. Has anyone tried this route and if so, whats the best way?

I believe polite_toad is quite new here, and does not know the ooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhwwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyytttttttttttoooooooooooolllllllllllooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggg history on this little snippet of the biking world.

Really short version, yes it can be done, and several of us would be happy to either show you how, or point you to various threads on the message board, and/or online maps that will help you figure out how.

I live north and don't go out that way much, but hang out a bit, I'm sure someone else will provide the necessary details.

Actually, scroll up from there a ways, to where Alan quotes the Steel Valley Trail newsletter:

"There is a lot happening along our trail and adjacent segments. We hope to make the longawaited, official connection of the Great Allegheny Passage with the Three Rivers Heritage Trail this spring in time for the 2013 biking season."

That kind of sounds like next year to me. No guarantees, obviously, but I don't see anything in that newsletter that says "Likely not next year."

For clarification, polite_toad, you should go to the thread dbacklover pasted in his first response, but start at page 1. Later in that thread, they get talking about a detour that's in place 100+ miles from here, but the top of the thread is about the Sandcastle situation.

Use the search box in the upper right for the words "Sandcastle" or even "Sadcastle", if you want the history.

I'm going to make an illustrated guide and ask Erok to sticky it.

THIS THIS THIS

Sound like a plan if I ever saw one. It's probably one of the top three questions people new to the scene have for Bike Pittsburgh.

So I decided to go ahead and try to bike down there anyway. Once the south side trail ended I crossed over to the gravel along the train tracks until I got to the Sandcastle entrance. The park was closed but the gate was open. I didn't explore any further and turned around but I wished I would have. Can I get to Homestead/waterfront by going through the Sandcastle entrance?

Yes.

and if the gate is closed, just go down the tracks a bit further, there's a easy way onto the road.
