the squeaky wheel

so in my building, there is a very cramped bike room (regular bikers can expect the worst spots because someone always takes your spot while you are out actually riding your bike). our attempts in the past to get management to keep it clear of obviously unused bikes have led to a couple once-every-few-years clean outs.

then this year, right when it got cleaned out, and i had a nice prime spot, the number of bikes exploded! every time i got a space, i'd come home from work and find another new (to the room) bike there.

so my girlfriend wrote up a poster, beseeching our fellow bikers to ask management for more space and better accommodations. we left 10 small pieces of paper with an email address, and i think 7 of them were eventually taken.

today, i left for work, and saw this:

when i returned, there was a sign on the bike room door informing users that they had a new, additional place to put their bikes! yeah, it's a shitty rack, but still! we got a car parking space turned into a bike parking space! all it took was asking people to act out in their own interests!

I moved into an apartment complex in Lawrenceville this past June. I asked the on-site manager about getting a bike rack put in since a lot of folks here ride bikes. He said that he had asked before and had been turned down. After I had enclosed 4 separate requests to the corporate offices with my rent check I got good news last week. The manager was directed to have a suitable space ready for bike rack installation for early spring. It's not right away but it is something. The manager said it is the first time corporate has even acknowledged a request for bike facilities. Small win but it feels good anyway.

Yeah, when I worked out in Robinson I organized some of my coworkers to plead to get a rack installed. It took longer than I'd hoped and wouldn't have been my first choice of rack design but it was in the garage and way better than locking to the railing behind a bush.

It can be frustrating and you might feel like you're being a PITA but it's nice when things finally work out.
