Three Rivers Heritage Trail Monopolized by Boaters on 06/06/2009 - 311 Concern

I have submitted a 311 response for the following concern/experience on 06/06/2009. Please do the same if you experienced an issue .

After cycling around the city for the day and then enjoying the Arts Festival on Saturday 06/06/2009, on my way home, I found the Three Rivers Heritage Trail to be monopolized by boaters and guests at the points below PNC Park and Heinz Field. There were canopies and chairs setup leaving at some places either no space or single track for pedestrians and cyclist to pass. Coming down the path from the Bettis Grill, I had to short cut through the grass to safely avoid the crowd of people at the bottom of the ramp. Below PNC Park, I experienced two unsafe incidents involving people blocking whatever little path was left for people to pass. I did pass a police car on the trail near the PNC Waterfall going in the direction of Heinz field. I’m hoping they were there to cut down on the trail monopolization by the boaters. I don’t know for sure since I didn’t think much of the problem until I was below PNC Park. I reported a similar incident last year documented on Service Request ID 96282.

Wasn't that the day of the Kenny Chesney "mega-concert" at the stadium? I saw an interview on the morning news with some guy from Oakmont who said he had boated down on Friday to get a good spot to park his boat. I think the show started at 4 and ran well into the night -- but when I went past the stadium at about 10:30 am, the parking lots were already filling up. I don't know if I looked for boats at the time.

Last year when Kenny Chesney played I was riding

that section (wearing dickies and a t shirt) and

was called a p*ssy and a f*ggot like 40 times and

called lance.

I thought "wow the pirates fans are jerks".

Then I went home and watched a news story about how

the Kenny Chesney fans were out of hand and the city was really angry at their behavior or something.

i had a similar experience last year. i also saw some drunk guy kick at a father who was enjoying the trail with his kid. he didn't hit him, but gave him one of those karate kicks and called him an asshole....for riding the trail with his kid.

So, turns out that Chesney himself is a cyclist:

But it's not all work... He is making the most of California living, grilling in his outdoor kitchen and regularly biking 25 miles up the Pacific Coast Highway.

He's also been seen tooling around Key West on a bike.

Now if we could only get through to his fans!

I suppose someone could write Mr. Chesney and suggest his appearance created a problem for cyclists- I am sure he has control over his true fans behaviors.

I would also suggest that people know when Steelers games are in the fall because cycling in the area of the stadium will be difficult just before and after them also.

The fall Pitt football fans generate some dock parties as well. Never had any experiences like the ones above though.

bad times when jimmy buffet is here too, but they are a bit better. they seemed more clueless than hostile.

Even trying to drive thru Northside with that concert was bad----I didn't even know what was going on till I got home. Bunch of drunk people crossing the freeway ramp.....

Guess I wasn't the only one who had trouble.

I was out there on saturday and there were a bunch of people tailgating on the trail past Station Square with lawn chairs and grills blocking the way. Then I turned and headed back across the river towards the Point to find all the boaters and revelers.

I heard a bunch of yells and catcalls but I didn't pay enough attention to them to actually hear what anyone really said.

Next time I'll just have to string up a nascar flag behind my bike and I bet they won't give me any trouble... Hell, they might even invite me to join them for a beer!

Midnight Mass rolled through there and we had some close calls with a few drunks.

I didn't mention in my 311 response about the alcohol related incidents. Besides having smart comments thrown my way, there was one guy with snorkling gear on who walked right in front of me in an alcohol induced state. When I said "pardon me", he responded with a smart comment. All I ask is for a little common courtesy and respect...

Now if Kenny Chesney only had a song about cycling on his next album, things'd be different.
