Bicycle Dreams showing at South Side Works, January 25th

For those interested in such things, the Race Across AMerica documentary will be in town. Tickets $11 in advance, $15 at the door.

And, not to steal anyone's thunder, but Bike-PGH is hosting it as a benefit for Team Citius Juniors Racing, and OTB is providing discounted food for moviegoers.

See the Bike-PGH calendar for more details.

"Bicycle Dreams"?

RAA is more like "Bicycle Sleep-Deprivation Hallucinations."

There.

Wednesday, uggh.

But there.

@Mick: Hey, some people enjoy spending $40K+ to achieve those mental states legally, rather than dropping a few bucks at their local freelance pharmaceutical distributor.

@reddan spending $40K+ to achieve those mental states legally

There is a certain glory in it.

Although lawbreaking isn't an offical part of it, I somehow doubt than anyone gets across the contient without breaking any laws.

Although lawbreaking isn't an offical part of it, I somehow doubt than anyone gets across the contient without breaking any laws.

As do I. The rules define a legal "stop" as "moving slow enough that individual spokes and decals on the wheels can be seen", which doesn't match any traffic code definition of "full stop" I've ever read.

That said, RAAM officials can and do impose escalating time penalties for observed lawbreaking.

I dont think one could "legally" walk across America anymore - it would be technically illegal to walk across an interstate highway, wouldn't it?

This land is your land, this land is my land...

@almklm what about overpasses with sidewalks?

dmtroyer
2012-01-07 23:12:57

I knew I could count on somebody here to snag me with a technicality. My point was that with so much of "our" country in private hands, fenced, railroaded, interstate-highwayed, access-controlled, etc., the ability of one to walk fro sea to shining sea is pretty limited.

But to your point, it would be an interesting exercise to map out an entirely legal route to walk across the country. I'd love to see that map.

So, back to the movie. I purchased tickets from the imathelete webpage but never got an email response with tickets to print out or a receipt or anything. Does anybody know if the tickets will be waiting for me at the theater on the 25th?

I'm there

I'm planning to go, anyone else planning to hang at OTB before the movie? I'm gonna try to get there around 6.

salty

(OT, and sorry for the slight threadjack - but I wanted to acknowledge I was wrong about walking coast to coast, and express my relief that it appears to still be possible to do so. Movie looks great, by the way, although I may have to wait for the DVD.)

I really want to go but I have no idea how late I will be at work. We are on trauma call. Maybe I can swing it. It would be nice to see some of you again.

stefb

Would not mind seeing this on the big screen.

Movies got expensive when I wasn't looking... Just two years ago when Urban Velo promoted the Bicycle Film Festival here in town people complained about the $8 ticket price that included a fully stocked, free to festival goers, afterparty.

The BFF was awesome. I miss that. But I guess Pgh doesn't rate with Barcelona and Paris.

i will be at ray's. as cool as the movie looks its a no brainer between riding my bike and watching other people ride.

@salty I'll try to be there

dmtroyer
2012-01-24 19:49:07

ok, hope to see some of you there... I'm planning on OTB @6. Pick me out of the crowd and I'll buy you a beer (or a coke).

BTW, like an idiot I didn't buy a ticket and now they're not showing up online... I assume it's just the typical "no online sales day of show" stuff and not that they're sold out, but does anyone know for sure?

salty
2012-01-25 16:49:28

Salty, I was disappointed to see that as well, but I assumed the same thing. I'll stand in the back if I have to.

chemicaldave

nice

salty
2012-01-25 21:40:01

@chemicaldave we made a bad assumption... luckily a coworker of mine ended up with an extra ticket because it is sold out with like 100 people waiting to get in.

salty
2012-01-26 00:07:42

Good news: more people than seats available.

Good news: the staff really handled the overflow humanely and smoothly

Bad news: didn't get in, should have bought a ticket online

Good news: bought the DVD for $20 instead of a ticket for $15

Great to see a strong turnout for a bicycling event.

Rather than dig up the thread about chain longevity, Danny Chew did some talking after the film and answered some questions, including the fact he once got 20k miles out of a chain! He also said he gets about 50k miles out of a bike.

and, he lubes his chain with motor oil and if it's not too dusty he can go 650-700mi between lubes (although in his terms that's sometime between a day and a week :)

PS: reddan, were you there? You also got a mention for being crazy enough to try DD on a bent. i didn't see you though...

salty
2012-01-26 04:53:47

@salty: Nah, I was hanging out with my kids.

I already had the DVD, so wasn't too worried about missing the screening.

reddan
2012-01-26 10:53:22

Bad news, tickets sold out before I could buy my date a ticket.

Good news, sold my $11 ticket to someone for $15.

Although I would have liked to hear Chew answer questions.

chemicaldave
2012-01-26 12:58:12

Chewman killed it. He did a presentation before

a Q and A. I could have listened to him lecture

for hours. For real. I mean there are manybe

3 or 4 other people on earth with the insight

into RAAM that he has. He was modest and funny.

steevo
2012-01-26 13:27:11

That's an incredible turnout! I would not have expected. At least I don't feel bad about not getting there. Was broke and home with the kids.

edmonds59
2012-01-26 13:38:05

@salty I don't believe we've ever met but I think I spotted you on the walk back to OTB, orange showers pass jacket and red pannier? I'll make sure to say hi next time.

I couldn't believe he said he lubes his chain with motor oil "the thickest stuff you can get".

dmtroyer
2012-01-26 13:59:15

IIRC from previous presentations, Danny also recommends wiping the chain and flossing the cassette with a rag after every ride.

reddan
2012-01-26 14:02:06

I was foolish and did not buy a ticket in advance. Still, it was a nice ride over there and back.

Mebbe we should set up a Friday night showing somewhere...there's a few copies of the DVD floating around, all we need is a venue.

reddan
2012-01-26 14:17:27

I've used synthetic motor oil as lube for nearly 15 years. I think I bought one quart of it when I was 16, still running on it.

Wish I could have heard Chew talk.

2012-01-26 16:25:20

@dmtroyer yeah, that sounds like me. i tried taking off my glasses to see if i could see someone who looked like your picture but it didn't work. :) i ended up only having one beer and heading home, my friend said there was freezing rain coming.

i felt bad because there were 3 of us and only one extra ticket - since my friend had a date and i didn't, she told me to take it... so i bought her a copy of the dvd to assuage my guilt. the movie was great but listening to danny talk was awesome. i'd love to ride with him sometime except i couldn't even remotely keep up.

salty
2012-01-26 16:47:52

love the chew.

but just because he says he does that to a chain and gets that mileage, does not mean that his gear wasn't completely blown. a blown chain and drivetrain won't skip together.

just ask his mechanics who got him off of that schedule and onto a more normal one. new chain about every 2500, new cassette and rings after 5000.

Want to read more about Chew? Steevo wrote a pretty awesome piece on him for Urban Velo a couple of years back. One of my favorites we've published actually. And I had a blast shooting it at Danny's house.

A buddy and I lucked out, didn't buy ahead of time and with being 20th on the wait list I didn't figure that our chances were good. Fortunately we did make it in. Would love to have stuck around for Chew's comments but it was a work night.
