I found this posting of a letter from the Chicago Tribune, May 16 1899 by a chief of detectives who is “not an advocate of the use of the bicycle among women.”

I suppose that puts me among the “uncultivated and degenerate whose course, boisterous and immoral conduct is constantly seen while riding along our streets and boulevards.”

Perhaps, but I presume you at least do not “wear shorter dresses than the laws of morality and decency permit.” If said presumption is correct, there’s still hope that you may one day elevate yourself to a higher standard of beastliness and debauchery.

I dunno. He promised bikes would do all those things for women, but all those glorious things haven’t seem to have come to pass ;(

I guess there is still hope, though.

I do not wear dresses at all thus I do not “wear shorter dresses than the laws of morality and decency permit.” I do, however, wear lycra biking shorts, which puts me in an entirely different category of beastliness. On the other hand, I nearly always tip my hat to all those of the fairer gender when I ride past. Surely, I can be no more gentlemanly that that in the moment it takes to ride past.

“… are frequently associated with women whose morality will not stand investigation and whose conversation is coarse.”

And where might I find such wheelers in this age?

Ah, if only… <3

Hmmm…

Notice that only men have responded to this thread. Somehow, I think htat probably speaks well of the women here.
