I agree with Nathan that most drivers have a rather skewed perspective regarding the law. Try driving (if you can excuse my suggestion) around the city following the posted speed limits sometime. (A few months I was driving to the Coop and Construction Junction, and someone passed me–passed me!–on Lexington because I had the nerve to keep the speed limit)
I’m not yet ready to say that individual car ownership is a Bad Idea. Using your car irresponsibly is, though. The same goes for your bike, however. I’ve seen my fair share of cyclists who do some pretty darn stupid things (and I don’t mean playing traffic–I’m talking about dealing with pedestrians in the same manner that many drivers deal with cyclists). As a culture, we need a change in our attitude, and no amount of bicycles or dearth of cars will do that on its own.
