Not yet. We're on it though.

I think I remember a couple of 3-rivers rack just across the street. I know there is decent bike parking at the Carnegie Science Center, a short walk away.

Ah thanks for posting this. I was going to post the same question. I will probably lock up at the science center when I am there this weekend.

Does the casino have something?

i just locked to one of the poles next to the entry

The casino had a big toaster-style rack just off the trail, east of the building, on the times I've been past. Haven't checked recently though.

The science center bike parking is by the bottom entrance, near the lockers (or was -- I'm now realizing that it's been a couple of years since I used it.)

There is a decent rack at the casino entrance, but the toaster racks all around it weren't bolted down last month when Stef and I were there.

So, I saw RF posted on Facebook tonight "Stage AE is just the worst. No bike parking, and they wouldnt let me bring my helmet in.".

I'm headed there tomorrow so I guess I'll find out firsthand... Is BP still "on it"? What can we do to help?

salty

When I asked several people who worked at the venue if there was bike parking, they all looked at me as if I grew another head, and one girl got out her phone and started googling it. there were lots of bikes locked to trees, signs, and railings, but I didn't see any actual racks.

I sent a message to their facebook page describing my experience there tonight, so hopefully if they know that people need them, they'll provide them (or tell their employees where they're located)

I think there are racks underneath the stairs to the fort Pitt bridge. Near root sports.

We are no longer "on it." I asked a friend who knows the booking guy for shows there to encourage him to get racks and he dismissed it. You could help by writing stage AE a letter just saying something simple along the lines of "I'm a customer of yours. I go to shows at your venue often. I ride a bike. You need good bike racks."

scott
2012-07-14 13:06:29

I walked around the building and found a sturdy railing with a "No Parking" sign to lock up to. Much closer.

If they respond to my message, I'll probably also tell them that since I can't afford a car or to take the bus often, I simply wouldn't go to shows there if I didn't have a bike and somewhere to park.

@scott - or better yet, "i was a frequent concert goer, but I won't be again until there are decent facilities for my bike, as that's how I get to your concerts."

cburch
2012-07-14 13:11:14

I sent another message that said that most people who ride bikes like live music, that if there's not a safe place to lock my bike, then I won't go to that place at all, and that getting bike racks would bring in a lot of customers (and save the trees that everyone was locking up to)

rubberfactory

i have a friend who works at stage AE. i am guessing that he rides his bike there occasionally. i will send him a message.

Can the "bike rack in a parking space" bike corral plan the City Art Commission just approved be used in parking lots, such as those ringing Stage AE?

atleastmykidsloveme
2012-07-14 13:30:29

mostly off-topic: what is the general admission scene like at stage ae? going tonight, would like to take a blanket and just chill, will that work or is it all standing?

dmtroyer
2012-07-14 19:59:41

there's standing, some expensive seats, and grass behind the seats.

rubberfactory
2012-07-14 20:23:44

Yeah, that will work, modulo the ground being wet and all.

BTW, I ended up with two extra tickets for tonight, free to anyone that wants them.

salty
2012-07-14 21:05:45

if people bike there, it might also help if you ask a couple employees if there's any bike parking on-site. If they can see the people who spend money there that want bike parking, it might help push them to get some installed.

And yeah, they didn't let me bring my helmet in, but I wonder what they'd do if a big group of people had helmets with them...

rubberfactory
2012-07-14 21:09:22

OK, I'm headed to the show, if anyone sees this before 8 and wants the tix text me at 412 eight four nine three one six one. I won't be able to answer for the next 30 min or so while I'm riding

salty

All of north shore needs better bike parking. There are bikes scattered all over the place during Pirate games, locked to whatever people can find. I always lock to the railing outside of Rivertowne since that's where I usually meet people before whatever event I am going to.

There is a rack near the Clemente statue - but they need more for sure...

Update, the guy who runs Stage AE's social media stuff says they're going to be ordering bike racks very soon. I sent him a bunch of info on good racks to use.

scott
2012-07-16 11:56:41

Now, if stage AE would change their bag policy so I don't have to go home, drop off my messenger bag before a show and hope nobody steals my nice tool bag attached to my seat.

benzo
2012-07-16 12:07:13

Yeah, and I better wear cargo pants since I'm not going to leave my $100 commuter lights on my bike either, and I'll probably have to carry my girlfriend's too since she had to lock her small purse / backpack to the bikes and I was left carrying 2 lights, 2 wallets, 2 sets of keys, and a multi-tool in my shorts very uncomfortably.

benzo
2012-07-16 12:11:44

It's crazy that places won't let you bring a bike helmet inside. How about we get a city ordinance that says you can't prohibit a person from bringing a bike helmet into a venue?

willb
2012-07-16 13:16:35

i went to stage ae last nite. there were a bunch of bikes, i locked to a sign out front.

on the plus side, from where i was standing in the venue (it was an outdoor show), i could actually see our bikes.

You're allowed to bring bags inside, at least rachel was able to. they just search it first.

on the other plus side, Alice Cooper was pretty fun too see live, outdoors

erok

They have total random discression on bags...

Here's a response I got from promo-west when I asked them about their bag policy.

Good Afternoon Ben,

Our venue has a policy of no large or oversized bags. Unfortunately, this is open to interpretation to the discretion of our security. I generally tell people no backpacks just to be on the safe side.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks,

Kym Harper

While I was disappointed at their response. At least they responded to my email.

The casino did not even respond at all to my concerns about their bike racks not being bolted to the ground (the kind that you can lift up and slide the ulock right off of)

benzo
2012-07-16 13:52:37

yeah, that's odd. just say it's a man-purse

erok
2012-07-16 14:19:42

I got in with my messenger bag on saturday, although the 17 year old who searched it was unsure what to do and had to ask their supervisor whose rationale was that since it wasn't a backpack it was okay.

dmtroyer
2012-07-16 14:26:10

Bag policy is determined by the band or promoter, not necessarily Stage AE. Even then there may be confusion with the security staff. I was told to call the day of the show.

rsprake
2012-07-16 14:39:19

There is limited bike parking at the entrance to each of the new T plus stops on the North Side. Neither is all that far from Stage AE.

2012-07-16 14:55:12

@erok - It wasn't even my bag. It belonged to a lady.

It was a rather small backpack, but since it was a backpack they wouldn't let us in with it at all. I saw 4 other unattended backpacks lined up along the fence outside because other people couldn't bring them in either. It's a nice surprise when you use transit or bike. I wound up carrying all of her important stuff because I was the only one with pockets.

Would never have problems taking a bag like this to belvedere's for a show. Damn, they even have a coat check room. C'mon stage AE, get classy like the ultra-dive.

benzo
2012-07-16 15:56:05

The big surprise was that it didn't even list anything like that on the FAQ for the venue... Although, it looks like you're not allowed to bring bicycles.

http://www.stageae.com/index_columbus.php?pg=faq.php

"What can't I bring to a show with me?"

For the safety of both concert patrons and our staff, we do not allow the following items:

Food, drink, bottles or cans, coolers, lawn chairs, umbrellas, recording devices, fireworks, candles, laser pointers, incendiary devices, inline skates, skateboards, bicycles, pets, and any form of weapon, including knives, mace and / or pepper spray.

benzo

Yeah there is no consistency in the rules about bags. Last year sherryl and I went to a show there. She went into one line they kinda looked at her hip bag with bike tools in it and let her in. The guy that i ended up with told me i couldent bring any of that stuff in. I said to him I have the same stuff in my bag as my girlfriend that they just let in. He didnt want to hear it and got pretty rude with me. I just went and left all my shit on my bike and lucky it was all there when i got back.

willie
2012-07-16 16:01:38

I hope the bands are allowed to have fireworks and laser pointers, I mean how are they gonna rock without those essentials.

willie
2012-07-16 16:05:00

yeah, nothing against stage ae in particular, but the show on saturday kind of reminded me why I don't particularly like big venues.

dmtroyer
2012-07-16 16:48:16

It would be great if they could do a bag check or even a set of lockers. Suggest it, if you're on Twitter @Stage_AE.

rsprake
2012-07-16 17:25:52

yeah, i just usually make sure that whenever i go to places with security, i just don't bring anything. it's guaranteed that that's the day you'll get the flat tire, but there is very little i need to bring into a concert.

erok
2012-07-16 18:27:21

plus, standing around with a bag on your back kinda sucks

erok
2012-07-16 18:28:51

I wish they made pannier's with a lock attached. It wouldn't be much protection for sure, but just having the formatlity of having to "break in" would make a difference in a lot of places. Of course, the lock would have to keep the pannier on the bike, too.

2012-07-16 18:46:25

@erok, I agree in general to try to bring nothing to shows... but lawn tix at stage ae on a night with a chance of tstorms... you're going to want to bring something.

dmtroyer
2012-07-16 19:17:55

I didn't take anything but my bike... but then again I'm an idiot.

Mick, Ortlieb does have some sort of locking system, but I remember looking at it and thinking I wouldn't really trust it.

salty
2012-07-16 19:57:26

yeah, when I was wearing my bag, they didn't want to let me in, even though it's tiny, but once I shifted it to one shoulder and called it a purse, they let me in.
