Just like the horrid tragedies that happen when people drive carelessly. Really, railroads hate crossings of any sort because they are required to move slower wherever there are crossings. Slowing down inconveniences them and costs them money, which is much more important to them than the occasional moron who crosses against the signal.

Can we plan our own tour around Halloween for this place? I need to venture farther out of the city and see things and shoot photos and meet new people..Let’s set some times and dates for..uhhh..not meeting up.Wink wink.

Halloween = much colder = probably wet = not safer

Something while the weather sort-of holds up would be better I think, specially if a medium-large group

True about the weather..Haha.I just thought it’d be more spooky, suiting.Nonetheless, i want to go anywhere abandoned/old.So let’s plan a bunch of meetups!

the times i didn’t go to carrie furnace were during the winter… i did NOT go there about half a dozen times to help set up an art installation involving 300 lbs of sod pulled on a sled along the railroad during the blizzard in february. that didn’t happen

we definitely should not go sometime early in october. anyone know when deer season starts? i’d like to not go there when the place is still devoid of crossbow-wielding yinzmeisters

I am totally busy on Saturday. There is no way I would want/be able to meet at the Eliza Furnace parking lot to go to Carrie Furnace–especially not around noon.

Is anyone else completely too busy Saturday?

AARGH (maybe)

Pennsylvania 2010 – 2011 Hunting Seasons and Bag Limits

DEER, ARCHERY (Antlerless Only) WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D: Sept. 18-Oct. 1 and Nov. 15-27. One antlerless deer with each required antlerless license.

DEER, ARCHERY (Antlered and Antlerless) WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D: Oct. 2-Nov. 13 and Dec. 27-Jan. 29. One antlered deer per hunting license year. One antlerless deer with each required antlerless license.

DEER, ARCHERY (Antlered and Antlerless) Statewide: Oct. 2-Nov. 13 and Dec. 27-Jan. 15. One antlered deer per hunting license year. One antlerless deer with each required antlerless license.

Allegheny County is WMU 2B. And, apparently it’s legal to hunt anywhere in the city, since it has not been designated a safe zone. Designating a safe zone requires an act of the legislature. What is *up* with that??

That being said, I’m pretty sure there are no turkeys, or more to the point turkey hunters (human, that is) along the Rankin approach.

A couple of extra thoughts:

1) I don’t know anything about Rivers of Steel, but according to their web site they run bike tours. Just to make things more on the up-and-up and also get the benefit of a tour guide (who actually knows stuff about what you’re looking at), we (bikepgh.org: hint!) could ask for a special-interest tour. I would be willing to pay towards covering the tour-guide’s time.

2) This is for @kordite: If I read the hunting regs correctly, you can ride with a rifle (Nov.29-Dec.11) or a muzzle-loader (Oct.16-23) or other stuff (depending on what you own). All you have to say is that you’re hunting. I bet you will get all the respect from drivers that you (and anyone who bike-pools with you!) deserve. I actually mean this sincerely.

i never saw hunters on the rankin approach, only on duck hollow

(take that one literally btw)

agreed…

i would completely be in for a legit bike tour coordinated with the Rivers of Steel, I’d even be willing to try and coordinate that, if people think it would go over.

I will actually be out of town for real this saturday, so I can’t NOT make it. I’ll be in Ohio seeing if overpriced admission and Funnel Cake Coma can induce my husband to ride spinny rides with me. I cried (audibly, embarrassingly) the year the Rotor left Kennywood, and he doesn’t even like to turn his head fast. harumph.

cedar point?

Yeah, that sounds right. It’s not seaworld, and that’s the only one over there I could think of. Rollercoasters and the like, but I’ve never been.

Dang. Toastmasters humorous speech contest, 1-3p on Sat. But that does put me in Oakland around 11 or noon, so I could see y’uns not ride off into the mid-day sun, I suppose, if I knew where y’uns weren’t meeting.

I know that the Industrial Arts Co-op did not use the location for filming “Attack of the Giant Woolly Millipede” back in the early 90’s (parts 1, 2, 3). I also NEVER hung from beams on climbing rope installing some sort of satanic owl with a 60 ft wingspan out there.

Part 1 has some footage of Sally Wiggins reporting on a kid who was shot by Rankin cops while he was poking around to check out the owl. I’m sure nobody remembers that.

It would be fun to not go out there on not this saturday, but can’t not make it.

RE: trail layout. Wouldn’t a trail following the river from Duck Hollow to Braddock be able to cross under preexisting bridges?

Man, all that hunting talk, my brain is now salivating over the thought of a carbon fiber compound bow on a back sling to go with a 17 lb matte black cf cross bike. I imagine you could cruise around town with relatively little automobile harrassment with a setup like that.

edmonds – you ever see The Weatherman? One of my favorite movies. He gets food thrown at him constantly – until he starts walking around town with a compound bow on his back. Then everybody leaves him alone. Fictional, but plausible.

I’ll have to check that out.

So… what are the stats on this?

There is an official hard-hat tour scheduled for Sat 10/2 at 10:30. Sold out, says the website. I would think that crashing a paid tour would be abysmally bad taste, never mind trespassing.

I wonder how it would go if you said “sorry” and pulled out your wallet offering to pay up. Of if there was a group of people and they all pulled out their wallets. Easy money for Rivers of Steel.

thanks for the heads up stu. maybe we should not not go tomorrow.

I know that staircase!!!!!!! (I mean) I don’t know that staircase!!! You had to cross the treacherous roof bridge to get there…. :D

I’m gonna have to look for my not-being-there pictures…. They were all in good-old-fashion film camera w/manual light sensor….

I’ll also look for my not-being-there Dixmont Asylum ones…. also on film…

Oh, this would’ve been such a nice weekend not to go exploring. Or not picking up tags.

RoadKillen

I went out to get the tag late on Sunday. Just in the time it took me to get a photo for the tag I saw 2 people come out and 2 more go in. I DID NOT join the other 2 going in. One person had been there before and knew some of the cool stuff to look at. Very rusty, very interesting and very dangerous. That giant deer head…sweet!

I got back to a computer too late to claim the tag, but definitely don’t regret the experience.
