Never having been to LA, but having a burning prejudice against what sounds like their reputation for THE CAR IS KING, this is pretty ambitious!

Which means we should try to beat them. :)

I’ve only heard that driving in LA is AWFUL and that public transportation is non-existent

Having driven, walked, and biked in LA (with the latter two options being a joke for transportation at the time), I’m really impressed by this. I have my doubts that it will make a dramatic improvement, though. On my last trip there this past March, I saw a fair number of bike lanes and bikes on the streets, but they didn’t seem to make the streets much more friendly.

They’ve got to start somewhere, though, and that’s a pretty impressive plan.

Driving in LA is GREAT – its the commuting that sucks. What is great is that everything is on a grid, so if the freeway is jammed, its easy and logical to hop onto surface streets.

And their transit system is improving – I think it’s called the red-line. Might not be as extensive as NYC’s subway system, but way better than Pittsburgh’s.

I would hardly call it non-existent. There are trains, light rail, bus service, carpool lanes. The problem seems to be that people have pretty severe bus allergies in LA.
