“Drewbacca, you really should refrain from speaking. No offense, but really, you have very little to offer those of that are actually out there riding and locking our bikes need to be heard.”

@gg – WTF dude? Unprompted and Uncalled for.

Hello Benzo. I probably shouldn’t have bothered, but it was in response to Drewbacca’s post earlier to me:

“And please ignore gg, he has a habit of inflammatory posts on here. He fails to realize that this is the reason no one likes him on this forum.”

I hardly have inflammatory posts, but whatever. It doesn’t matter since no one likes me. lol Talk about a troll post, but she likes to flip things around.

At the end of the day, who cares? Better to stick to the topic since it is very important. I read this topic waiting for U-Locks to be breached often. Not sure we will see that or not, but I need to be ready. I love my bikes and don’t want to lose them. I ride them to and from work and my car sometimes sits for weeks at a time.

Enjoy.

PS: I could have wrote a response to this post from her:

Drewbacca wrote: I’m confident that there is a rash compared to past summers… but it might be evidence of more bikes on the road. So, yes… a rise, I think. Perhaps not as gloomy when looked at as a percentage of bikes on the road. I haven’t seen any numbers.
I think the fact that we had one known bike thief in this thread speaks for itself.

Translate:
I’m confident… it might…yes? Perhaps? I think…

On undamaged, left behind U-Lock…

That gives me some solace in my OCD double/triple checking to make sure my lock is properly attached. I often walk about four or five paces away and then turn around and look at it again

Yep, me too. I think my record is checking three times, at least per the custodian in the loading dock at work…

@gg, I suppose that I should take my own advice regarding sending PMs if there’s a problem. So for that, I apologize. I also apologize for saying that no one likes you, which is clearly flaming and unhelpful.

Apologies aside, I was responding to your own inflammatory remarks towards another poster. I would hope you would look back at what you said and consider why an objective third party would see it as inflammatory before carrying our disagreement into another unrelated thread.

I don’t condone online bullying and needless insulting, which is what I see it as. I will speak out against it if I see it. I do need to keep in check that I’m not being a hypocrite, on the same token; two wrongs don’t make a right.

As a psychiatrist may I suggest that the solution for your OCD is to carry 2-3 U-locks, so even if you didn’t put on one correctly, there’s almost a 0 chance that you wouldn’t put all of them on correctly? So no reason to check then.

This dude never needs to go back and check if his bike is locked up properly.

“Did I put all fourteen locks on? Perhaps I forgot one and my bike is now locked less securely than usual. Better check them again. My bike’s right outside, so I’ll be back in half an hour.”

This Huffy has been locked at the bottom of the stairs outside of PNC Park by river rescue for at least a couple of weeks.

It’s locked with a gun lock, the type that are typically given out at outdoors-type events. And from experience, I know those keys are tiny. Maybe someone lost their key? Maybe this bike was stolen and abandoned? Not sure so I’m posting it.

Whoa, I can’t tell from the pic how it’s being used, but a gun lock sends a subtle yet meaningful message. Might have to think about that one.

I suspect the lock is one of these which can be cut quite easily if used as a bike lock. And only someone who has purchased a handgun from a legitimate source would know what one looks like – so most thieves probably only see it as a cheap lock.

Btw, these make for poor gun locks too, but at least they assure that the gun isnt loaded (the cable is looped through the barrel of the gun) & keeps small kids from accidentally shooting themselves.

what brand/make is this bike by the PNC park?

Hard to say. Could be a Huffy Women’s Newport 7-speed.

Definitely a Huffy. Not sure the make but I will check after work. The lock looks exactly like the one Marko posted, only the loopy part is silvery metal instead of yellow. The box part of the lock is yellow.

My new/old Cannondale CAAD 3 (or 4?) was stolen a few days ago in Garfield. It is light purple with orange handle bars and black front and back fenders and a rack on the back. It’s pretty noticeable. I didn’t have time to take pictures of it : (

I know this is a long shot, but I would truly appreciate it if anyone could look out for it.

@crystal, it’s not a terribly long shot — people have gotten bikes back here. Do you have a photo? If so, post it here (use the tiny button up above where you type). I’ll add it to a page where we track all the bikes reported stolen (http://bikingpgh.com/index.php?title=Bikes_reported_stolen).

I was down near PNC today and the Huffy locked up by River Rescue is a Main Street and I got what I think is the serial number from underneath. Lock shot also… hope this helps someone.

Some people watch telenovelas on Univision.

I just read the threads on this Board for my fix of drama.

It’s like watching kittens slap-fighting. Without the cute.

@apollino, do you have a photo? If so, please post it here. I’ll add it to the “Bikes Stolen” page on the Wiki. That’s helped others get their bikes back.

My Bike was stolen last night – september 24th – on Hays Street in East Liberty.
Hays and Euclid.

It is a metallic gold trek road bike.
It’s has a Yellow VETTA box attached to it (perhaps one of the only in Pittsburgh)
And red handlebar tape.
It’s a 54cm frame

I can only imagine its still in East Liberty, but that’s only a guess since it was stolen by someone walking by at 1230 am. I went inside quickly and within two minutes it was gone.

I’m sorry I have no pictures. But please keep your eyes out for a bright yellow VETTA box and a red handlebar tape.

My name is Stephanie and you can call/ text me at — 412.999.3488 — if you see it. Let me know the direction it was heading or where it is laying.
or email if you like – at stephanie.dax@gmail.com – though the phone is much faster for me.

Thanks!!

@BH Any idea what part of the city these latest thefts are happening? Northside, Southside, etc.? I know I’ve seen a lot of bikes locked up with simple cable locks lately, so maybe a neighborhood targeted blitz to educate about the need to use u-locks would help.

Also, I love the bait-bike approach, but I think it would have to be coordinated with the cops. Catching the thieves does nothing if they cant be prosecuted and put in jail. Have you brought the bait-bike idea up with the detectives from the other cases?

Hi Marko,,a lot on the north side I know,,i had a bike group come in on Sat they were at Bettis bar and grill only one bike locked up out of the 7 or so and when they came out the only bike taken was the one with a quality lock,,go figure,,,but we had over 20 calls in 7 days,,,

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to correct my original post on September 25th regarding the stolen Breezer and Specialized bikes. The Specialized is actually a Tricross (not a Cyclocross) and below is a better photo.

This weekend we went searching. The Quick Cash Pawn Shop on 51 only had two bikes (at least on display), and Trader Jack’s did not have many bikes either. I’m wondering if these people are maybe resorting to Ebay or a similar medium for selling or maybe transporting to other cities nearby (Erie, Cleveland, Buffalo).

Finally, being people who feel like lost souls without a bike, we went to Bicycle Heaven to find replacements. Craig and Brian really hooked us up with great bikes, and were a treat to work with. Thanks!

Lots of new students in town with bikes. I hope they have good locks.

BH – can you elaborate on “quality lock” – was it still a cable lock? That is weird but maybe the one locked was the only one worth stealing.

Jessica428 – great to hear some positives for a change – will definitely put BH on my list of shops to recommend. :)

Get everyone to buy a U-lock (and I don’t mean a crappy $5 one), and then get them to recite the mantra:
* Through the wheel
* Through the frame
* Around the rack
* Make sure the lock is secure
* Ommmmm…..

hey people it’s Brian @ Bicycle Heaven. We have had 3 people arrested thus far, and I stopped hearing about stolen bikes. The past week it seems like it’s happening quite a bit. I have a list of bikes stolen that are not even listed with this website. Bottom line is get a good U lock or take your chances. Whoever is doing the stealing is pretty brazen. Fyi, my cable cutters for trimming shifter and brake wires also will cut through pretty much any cable lock, and that is a small tool. There is a reason why Kryptonite has insurance on
U-locks, but won’t cover New York, Philly, LA, etc…some thieves that have enough time can break through U locks, but I believe they need some time to do so. I’m not sharing any info online on how to get through a U lock, but I know it has happened. This keeps happening every year. Last year we nabbed some people at the t station, and I didn’t recognize any of them. It’s a crappy economy with drug addicts and criminals stealing whatever they can. This year seems excessive to me as well. Just 1 guys opinion. U locks people U locks!! PS-My daughters bicycle was stolen if anyone comes across a 16″ green Schwinn atb (Sad but true)
Just keep listing as much info as possible, these guys are not the sharpest tools in the shed. We already caught a few. Good luck and get a freaking u lock!

IMHO, it isn’t the economy which in our region is pretty darn good. It is the easy target and the quick cash for someone needing their drug of choice. A few bikes were stolen and that word got out that there is money to be made. The word spreads and that is how it works. The progression will be simple. At the moment U-locks are what is needed and once cyclists catch up and buy them, it will escalate to great U-locks and more. This already happened in places like Seattle and Portland. We are just behind. People will do anything for their drug of choice and economies mean very little.

Maybe bike pgh can buy an engraver ($20 or less) and us members can go to bike pgh HQ and use it to engrave our names on our bikes? I know it won’t prevent theft but will probably make recovery easier.

Or this would be a good way to get customers into a bike shop.

Not sure if this is the right thread to post this, but just saw this ad on Craigslsist.
Looks highly suspicious. Has anyone here lost a Specialized Hardrock? Or anyone you know?
