A great idea! Roll with it.
Bloomin bikes challenge
The other thread gave me an idea, how about this. This can be kind of an adjunct to the tagorama. Everybody grab snapshots of bikers out and about in pgh as they start to pop out of the woodwork for spring. Rules - 1. each person to shoot a particular biker only once (some honor system required). Pic shall be close enough to more or less identify the person - no shots from "space". Other rules as may be dreamed up as necesary. Post em up on the flikr site. How's that sound, anybody up for this? I've been trying this, it's kind of tricky to grab those shots.
Oh, 3. Photos to be freshly shot, no stored photos (honor system, agn).
Why not post pics here?
Agreed tricky as I usually see other cyclists while on my bike... with a helmet cam one could grab frames.
Ok, yeah, post em here. But I'd like them to end up on the BikePgh flikr site as well. I just want to generate a pile o pics o pittsburgh pedalers, and this seemed like a fun way to do it.
I'll bust out my stalker lens.
I saw 0 bike commuters downtown this morning. Had camera out and ready. GAHHH!
Is everyone playing hooky today?
I usually see 4 or 5 on my way from teh bus to the office in the morning. Today I saw only one. Great idea though.
If I get beat up for taking random photos of strangers, can I blame you?
You can blame me, but I don't know if that's going to help you any! Ha!
In the spirit of neighborhood beautification - I guess I'm going to have to wear my balaclava until you guys get tired of doing this. And I was so looking forward to Spring too.
Too bad, man, if I had seen this before I left home I'd have given you a heads up. You want to take my picture when I leave?
Ha ha, that seems like cheating! I want pictures "in the wild". I'm going to go wander around at lunch if I can, but maybe I'll spot you later.
I saw plenty o people. One guy ahead of me was wearing shorts! In February! Imagine!
A co-worker reported seeing a cyclist on Monroeville Boulevard this morning, headed in the general direction of Turtle Creek. Seemed surprised to see a cyclist in that location, but then agreed it might be the best option, or one of the better options for routing in that area. Unfortunately, no camera was available at the time.
There we go, 9. Stroll downtown between 12:30 and 1:00. No women. Where the ladies at?
Poached some from the end of the EFT, but had to get this thing rolling.
I sure hope that nobody catches me on camera riding on a sidewalk, except for that one right in front of AE on hot metal street. I'll frame a shot of that.
If I get you Dan I'll put a black rectangle on your eyes.
One thing I discovered is that down by Point Park there are a s**tload of messengers with bags but no bikes.
bill, that pretty much describes all of the southside, lawrenceville, and central oakland.
30 minute walk through downtown revealed half a dozen cyclists, four motorcycles and dozens of college aged students wearing shorts (some in flip flops too!)
Here's my first attempt at posting a photo on the message board:
I initally read the thread title as, "Boomin Bikes Challenge". I was excited for a bike SPL competition.
Bill, your first photo looks a bit like Swalfoort. Sara, can you confirm? (anyway, looks female to me)
No, definitely wasn't.
Nope, wasn't me. But, I wish someone had been around to get a shot of the tumble I took on the way in this morning! Moving from River Avenue onto the Trail, crossed 4 feet of hard packed grass/dirt, then dropped into about 2 inches of mud for the last foot to the trail. Front wheel stopped dead, I pitched forward. Fortunatelty there were no injuries, just a little dirt on the professional clothes....! I really need to relearn how to ride in mud, it appears. Is PORC still offering a 1A ride?
Ooh, sorry to hear about your fall!
2 this morning, between 8:45 and 9: am., and 2 firsts - first "hipster" and first woman.
C'mon people, shoot some people!
(Dear FBI, I mean that strictly in the photographic sense, I in no way encourage any individuals to use firearms against others. Thank you.)
I had disgarded this yesterday as beign too poorly focused. But, I'll add it just to get the numbers up.
">
Like it! Actually some lack of focus is fine and maybe even preferable!
No photos, but in the 20-minute hike I took between Ft Pitt Blvd & Stanwix to East/Madison & Concord (by I-279 on-ramp), I didn't see a single woman on a bike. Maybe 15 men.
bill, you hit up my work on my day off, hah.
Late Friday afternoon, Downtown, including another hipstah, cool bmx kid, and a Doppleganger!
I'm usually very skittish about shooting pics in public, but this is cool exercise, when I see a shot I forget that self-consciousness. But getting lonely on here...
Thanks for all the pics. I am going to see if I can get any photos on Carson st.
Took a few shots this afternoon in the Southside. Saw a lot more bikes, but this game is hard to play while you're on the go.
Popo - they went from the Southside Trail up over the Hot Metal Bridge. Never seen cycling cops on the trail before.
I don't do Flickr, but feel free to add them all there if yinz want. Everything is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License.
woot!
I'm just trying an experiment with posting from my phone, bear with me.
worked!
Atempting a mobile post using Picasa
Worked, yay!
This bloomin bike buzzed me on the bloomin sidewalk.
He locked up to a sign in front of a UPMC building with a cable lock thinner than my shoe laces.
Woohoo! I saw 2 roadies out my way on Sun, one in Crafton and one in Carnegie, but no pics (they both took me by surprise!). I even heard some radio announcer, commenting on the delightful spring weather, say how many bikes were out.
It's a fuzzy photo, but I think we know the folder...
Yea, phone camera not yielding good results, but its hard to carry the real camera all the time. Plus, I find I have to go from phone to facebook to computer save to flickr to board to post photos. Gotta be some serious degradation there!
I even got a big "Hello, Sara!" as I took this photo!
It is my custom to call out to people I know as I bike past them, or as they bike past me. If I'm walking with someone else, and I do this several times (as sometimes happens when I know a lot of people), they can get annoyed. Whatever, I think it's great.
It certainly made my day. Until I realized it was you, I was a tad nervous about being so obvious about taking the photo. It looked like you were having a fun ride.
The girl on the folding bike is also an occasional boarder - i'll send her the link.
Cool, it's me
@Sprite - cool, you are the first person I photographed who actually was a participant in this board. Or at least the first one that I knew of....
There were a ton of cyclists out this morning in downtown. I caught a few on my phone camera.
(The last one was from a few nights ago. The rest were from this morning.)
wish I'd gotten a picture of the badass old dude in office-type clothing who I saw climbing liberty today. Made me feel lazy as I walked up the hill...
Here are a few more from recent days:
I think I got this guy the other day, too:
Notice the two riders behind this guy?
Got them too! They waved!
Nice to catch the cyclist riding illegally in the bus lane....
And on downtown sidewalks
Bridge crossing on the sidewalk is legal -- at least it is on the OTHER sidewalk
Cyclists sometimes take interesting routes. This guy was headed to the Shared Use Sidewalk at Station Square, from the trail.
These guys were looking to stay ON the trail, I think.
I'll post a few more later.
That station square connection is so confusing. I never really know where to go. I stay on the sidewalk until the crosswalk near the valet now.
Wow, nice work Sara!
Just doing a dump of other photos from my phone. Seen around town, in no particular order were:
This was a bike cop on Fifth Avenue
This one's a little too far away, but I thought I'd share it anyway.
rsprake - agreed, although i'd call it "abysmal" rather than just "confusing", because it's still convoluted and dangerous long after the confusion is gone.
I was organizing my flickr account and found a photo that I had not yet posted. This is from a while ago...
The City has been crazy with bikes the past few days:
Missed a shot of another Pedicab, but caught a cyclist near the Convention Center:
Hard to tell from this shot, but this guy was wearing camo pants -- just outside the NRA convention. I think it was coincidental:
Suburban rider, enjoying a beautiful saturday:
a shame, sundays are beautiful days for riding downtown, in my experiences.
Recent interesting sightings (sorry, no photos).
-Person in a full-length black burqa riding a primary-colors Y-style mtn bike.
-Middle-school-aged kid passing me on the outbound forbes ave downhill: all entirely while doing a wheelie on his bmx and rather elegantly braking with the heel of his sneaker.
A few more from around town:
This guy was hauling ice at Station Square:
Taking photos of cyclists is hard because my phone is so slow. I had the good fortune to capture this guy in the frame before I even fully realized he was there:
This rider was heading SB towards the Smithfield Street Bridge. Not a great photo, but wanted to document the female rider.
Here are a few more from recent weeks.
(left the bike somewhere else, but noticed the pedals were in the helmet.....)
I still have a few more to post. Just didn't want to jam up the site by posting too many in a single post.
Here are more.
The camera on my phone is so slow that I need to start keeping all the photos of cyclists who are no longer visible in the frame. But perhaps that humor is best saved for just myself.....
