Can we build a plow bike for the trails before this winter or not?

I bet the city has a few of those of something similar stashed somewhere. Someone needs to find them and clean the moth balls out.

@ jason – there sre some sidewalk clearing devices similar that do the sidewalks in Schenley Park. Possibly if we all whinge to our elected official, they would do the Panther Hollwo trail or the jail trail as well.

I don’t think the problem here is available technology – it’s getting our paths prioritized.

That being said, the Craiglsit snow blower looks like what we would need if we expected a few 30 inch snows every year -overkill for Pittsburgh.

Whoever does the sidewalks in front of the hotels Downtown on our frequent 3″ mornings, with the rotary sweeper, that’s the sort of machine we need. Plus someone to keep it, fuel it, maintain it, and actually run it when needed.

I just wonder how long it would take for such a machine, running, to make a trip from Joncaire & Boundary, down PHT, the length of EFT, across the Smithfield St Br, SSide Trail, back across Hot Metal, and deadhead back to J&B. I’m guessing a nice loping jogging pace. Maybe 2 hours? Anyone want to venture a better guess?

When there’s snow, it takes me about an hour to walk from the Swinburne St parking lot to Grant St, My guess is a loop with a machine would take closer to 3 hours.

Just found this….

The Story of the Bike Plow

(drag behind – low tech but apparently effective)

And this

plow front, pedal powered, based on riding mower geometry

Hey that first website is Fermilab. A bike plow designed by particle physicists? Rad!

And the other is from a Trek bike engineer……

Cool Stuff.

Maybe add an electric or gas motor to a bike with a plow.

Good info on the type of blade for one’s shovel in the Fermilab article.
