1994 Burley Rumba Tandem (700c wheels)
Purchased four years ago from an older couple who had owned it since new, they were upgrading to a $7,000 Calfee. This bike has been adult owned since new, as my wife and I purchased it to see if we liked tandem riding. We did, unfortunately we’ve had three children in the past 4.5 years and have not ridden this bike more than four times for a total of 200 miles. We will probably get another tandem in a couple years, but we could use the cash right now for some other home improvement projects.
Size medium frame – accommodate someone 5’5” to 6’1” in the front and in the rear, 4’11” to 5’10” (with the many stem choices, you might be able to stretch this a bit as well, especially on the taller side for front and rear). The small ranges listed are probably the true lowest sizes.
Since owning, the following work has been done: new NITTO moustache bars (front), new NITTO falcon bars (rear), new adjustable height/length front stem, new 3T “the stem” (rear), hubs rebuilt, headset rebuilt, both BB’s rebuilt, new primary drive chain, new Kool Stop brake pads, new shifter and brake cables, new Panaracer Pasela tires, new Mavic 518T tandem rear wheel (old one was getting spongy), new GripShift bar-end road shifters (7spd, index), new Benotto cellophane bar tape.
The bike has Sugino Fuse tandem cranks front and rear, eccentric front BB, pressed rear BB, Shimano STXrc 7spd index drivetrain, Shimano tandem hubs that accept rear drum brake (frame has welded tab for drum brake also), Shimano Canti brakes, Kalloy seat posts, MKS Sylvan Lite touring pedals with New leather toe straps.
Overall condition for this bike is better than good given it’s age. Paint is in great shape, with exception of usual missing paint around BB shell where chain would sometime drop and drag.
As was the case for me and my spouse, this is a very affordable way to try out a tandem without the high cost of buying new, which would be at least 2.5 times this price, if not more, for the same caliber of bike. Plus, I went and made all the upgrades/repairs you’d have to make that if you were buying used from someone who had ridden theirs a lot previously.
Also, this is a painted Burley frame. There were some problems (rusting) with powder coated Burley frames that came out in the late 90’s and later.
SALE DOES NOT INCLUDE THE TWO BROOKS SADDLES. SALE DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY SADDLES.
Asking price: $780.00
I live right in Squirrell Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh and also could arrange delivery within reason.
