Dedicated bike lanes on Warhol, Clemente & Murray county bridges?

More bike lanes on bridges to and from downtown, great connections here, good news all around lately: https://twitter.com/billpeduto/status/507202595577159680/photo/1

Only the Warhol Bridge ones will be temporary. The other two will be permanent, but have a longer time until completion (Oct. 30 for the Clemente Bridge one, and still TBD for the 10th st one). The latter is seeing more delays for figuring out ways to connect it with existing trail networks on the North and South shores of the Mon.

The Allegheny County press release says that permanent lanes will be installed on the Clemente Bridge in October, and will be usable even during baseball games when the bridge is closed to vehicular traffic. It also says that the 10th street bridge will have permanent bike lanes when construction is completed. What makes you think they are going away?

From the county website announcement looks like a couple are going to be here to stay: "Fitzgerald also announced that permanent bike lanes will be installed on the Roberto Clemente Bridge (Sixth Street) by October 30th . Two exclusive bike lanes, one in each direction, will consist of a 5’ wide lane with a 3’ buffer. The lanes will tie into the trail system as well as the City’s bike infrastructure. The addition of the bike lanes will reduce vehicular traffic from four lanes, two in each direction to two lanes, one in each direction, on the Clemente Bridge. The bike lanes will be maintained and accessible when the bridge is closed to vehicular traffic, but open to pedestrians. Additionally, Fitzgerald announced that the Philip Murray Bridge, which is undergoing rehabilitation, will also include two 5’ wide bike lanes with 3’ buffers, one in each direction, when the work is finished. There is no time frame established yet for when the work will be done, and discussions are underway with the City to determine how best to tie into the City’s bike infrastructure on Second Avenue. The bike lanes, once complete, will also provide connectivity to the Eliza Furnace Trail. "

According to the county press release: "Fitzgerald also announced that permanent bike lanes will be installed on the Roberto Clemente Bridge (Sixth Street) by October 30th." And the 10th St. bridge will also get bike lanes once the current rehabilitation is complete. So there will be permanent bike lanes across the rivers.

Wow. I don't even recall hearing a rumor about theses bridge lanes going in. Either people are getting better at keeping secrets or these plans developed almost over night (as opposed to the multi-year, multi-decade usual bike infrastructure time frame). Great surprise!

I was also surprised. In a good way. I have some quibbles about the existing bike lanes and bikeways and complain (because I want them to be as awesome as they have the potential to be). And this seems to be one of the best implementations (along with the Birmingham bridge, but it doesn't connect as well so it doesn't get a lot of credit till we address 5th/forbes) But heck yeah, this is awesome!

I guess they could have made these lanes look even uglier somehow... why not just a line of cones like on Liberty during Pedal Pgh? I just hope that the general public realizes that bike lanes dont have to look like a PennDot nightmare. Even the new ones on Penn could forgo the bollards for flower planters for instance. Maybe we have a reverse bait-n-switch plan that starts with ugly then appeases with mediocre?

Seems to me that comics enthusiasts are a population that can be tipped pro-cyclist. We move faster under our own power than is possible than for the non mutant (bike riding) population. We do battle with a dangerous and seemingly indomitable foe (pissy motorists), preferentially in urban settings. Many or us wear garish clothing sometimes, and for some that even includes tights. And best of all, they, humble readers, can join us in battling the evil on the streets! So what's missing? Back-story, masks, capes? We can do that can't we?

So what’s missing? Back-story, masks, capes? We can do that can’t we?
IMO, if you want business converts, what's missing is more people (who are obviously cyclists) spending money there. Given that my son is getting into gaming, I may have to make a point of popping in over lunch a few times whilst be-jerseyed. And mentioning that, if I'd had to drive over from work on the South Side and find parking, I wouldn't be spending money there. That said, reviving the concept of the Superhero Ride (oooh...and maybe combining it with a nice lengthy Tour de Comic Shop...) is an idea with some appeal.

I've never used the sidewalks on the sisters bridges. But it seems reasonable. (I use the pedestrian walk on Ft. Duquesne, and sometimes Smithfield and 16th. Not to mention HMB.) It should be possible to accommodate both, especially if the walks are one way on either side, maybe with a line. And those of us who don't mind, just mix it up with the cars; we're used to it. Remember, it's not about beating down the car people (however satisfying that would feel). It's about creating usable transportation options for a wide variety of riders.

@benzo, the county had been doing some welding repair work on the 6th St bridge two weeks ago. They were taking up an entire lane to do this. Don't know if they are done, but this could be the reason for the delay. Also, the expansion joint on the north side of the bridge, particularly on the northbound lane, is ROUGH. Hopefully they'll work on it before installing the lanes. Are these simply painted-on lanes, or will they have bollards as well?

"Also, the expansion joint on the north side of the bridge, particularly on the northbound lane, is ROUGH." This. I have to remember to get in the left lane before the joint because it's really dangerous in the right lane. Before I learned to switch lanes, I've thought "Oh God, I'm gonna bite it!" when going over that right lane joint.

If I recall correctly, they will not be installing bollards. They just have that buffer between the bike lane and the main lane. Installing bollards would probably be somewhat of an issue with all the pedestrian traffic that this bridge gets during gamedays and other events. Also, the Steel City Showdown uses this bridge as part of their circuit and the bollards would have to be removed for safety. One only has to flash back to Monday to a pro bike race in the Basque Country to see why having objects like these during a race is a bad idea.

Bike lanes on the bridge are almost ready. Crews were finishing putting up bollards and final touch ups. The bridge is looking' good! Also, the bike lane on inbound 6th St, from Fort Duquesne Blvd to Penn, is in. Outbound, there's sharrows. We'll see if delivery drivers respect the numerous "No parking" signs on the inbound lane. They never have before. There's also no turning box at 6th and Penn as of this morning. However, the bike lane has no bollards so it's easy to take the lane to turn onto outbound Penn.

I have mixed feelings about the bollards, I test rode those lanes yesterday on a ride. For one thing, I love it when the bridge is completely closed to cars and converted to a pedestrian festival zone. The rubber duck party on the bridge 2 years ago was fab. I may toodle over there today for opening day just to see how that works. Hopefully the bollards are spaced at some rational "booth" dimension. Also, when the bridge is closed to cars and is over-run with pedestrians please for Roberto's sake don't whine about people in the bike lanes. Closing roads to cars for people to use is the best possible thing. We have hundreds of bridges around here, find another one if it bothers you.

Positives: * I biked the Clemente inbound lane around 9:30 this morning, and there was no trash. * There was nobody parked in the Sixth Street inbound bike lane down to Penn Ave. Negatives: * At both Ft Duquesne Blvd and Penn Ave, I had to deal with a vehicle turning right. * The Federal Street bike lane by PNC Park is a DZBL. I will refuse to use it. Either make that a no-parking area (and enforce it), or remove the paint. Maybe we didn't know any better about DZBLs in 2007, but there is no excuse for putting any in now.

Five cars and a box truck were parked in the 6th street bikelane at 8:40 pm. I took pics and sent in a 311 request to have that block better patrolled. As I was taking pics of the first two cars one of the drivers came over and I told him he couldnt park there. He looked at me confused. Then a woman in uniform came over from the hotel and started apologizing and asking if they were going to get ticketed-I think she thought I was a bike cop since I had a reflective vest on. She said the drivers didnt speak English and she would tell their boss to write a note telling them in their language (Napal?).

My takeaway from yesterday's ride: check the Pirates' promotional schedule before planning a trip across the Clemente bike lanes. When I came through early afternoon, the entire bridge, including bike lanes, was shut down to set up for the evening's fireworks promotion. The only passable route was the upstream sidewalk. It was pretty busy when I went through around 1:30, so I can only imagine the increase closer to gametime.
smarchit

they have to close the bridge to all users for fireworks, at least close to the time the fireworks are going to happen, for safety reasons to keep you far enough away from the blast area of the fireworks. Seems like common practice. They also close down sections of the riverfront trails on either side of the river between the point and the 6th st bridge and in front of PNC park.

How is this enforced in other areas of the city with similar bike lanes to the one on 6th (next to the curb, no parking, no bollards)? The lack of free parking options downtown certainly makes this block attractive for drivers, particularly if they notice that the "no parking" designation isn't being enforced at all. I would not be surprised if the businesses on this block offered "incentives" to parking officers and cops for them not to enforce this block. There's always been illegal parking here and the bike lane was not going to make that go away immediately.
chrishent
2015-04-26 21:09:55
Just to be difficult: Yes, it's annoying that cars use "our" lanes. But it's easy enough to take the lane. If it's such a big issue the cops will start tagging the parked cars, just to make transiting drivers happy.
ahlir
2015-04-26 21:46:12
@Ahlir, I have no problem with taking the lane. This street was not problematic for riding before the bike lane was painted on and it isn't now either, regardless of if cars are parked on the bike lane or not. I would simply like for drivers to respect the numerous "no parking" signs. Unfortunately, it seems that for this to happen, it will require continuous targeted enforcement on this block.

Re: 6th street bike lane. This guy seems to be a habitual offender Those fogged license plate covers piss me off big time. It's like saying - I am above the law, or I can violate traffic laws and maybe not get caught. What pisses me off even more is that nothing is being done about them. I am sure if people were being ticketed for these the word would spread and they'd be gone. This is one offense that doesn't require any special tests like radar, breathalyzer etc. I rarely drive, and I had a cop car behind me at least three times this past month. How do these people not get pulled over? End of rant.

Pittsburgh could adopt the towit app to allow people to report illegal parking for enforcement. I think this would be better than asking folks to call 911 to report these issues. "With Toronto mayor John Tory declaring traffic congestion Public Enemy Number 1, a local app developer has been inspired to help. Michael McArthur, along with business partner Gregory Meloche and a small group of developers, has created Towit, which harnesses crowdsourcing to point out illegally parked cars to the authorities." "People are frustrated and want to solve this problem. Like cyclists that are mad at people parking in bike lanes, those are pissed off people that actually don’t need any more incentive than ‘I am going to do this, I am going to report this person, and hopefully he will never do this again,’ ” he says. “That’s all it takes. And we have hundreds of interested people already.” Article about it in toronto http://www.thestar.com/business/2015/01/19/towit-pitches-a-digital-solution-to-illegal-parking.html App website: https://towit.io/

Related to the thread, though not the last couple of posts: Whose brilliant idea was it to install a DZBL just before the bridge? https://youtu.be/IOdpl0KeShM I refuse to use it. The fact that a large truck is hanging out into that lane is relevant, but not the point. It just isn't safe to be in this.

@Benzo, I wonder if we couldn't go further and use the Uber-share model. Meaning, if somebody reports an illegally parked vehicle using TowIt or whatever, it goes onto a public web-served list. Any tow-truck operator that wants to go out and tow it is authorized to do so, at their normal fee for illegally parked cars. That way, there's no agency budget, no friction between citizens and the PoPo, and the violaters bear the economic impact of their bad decision making. You'd think that a few tow-truck operators might start cruising the hot-zones with their apps, waiting for an opportunity.
vannever
2015-04-29 19:53:12
that would be awesome, but there would need to be a system in place to tell people who has their car. traditionally if a private company tows from a private lot their info is often posted. Without that info how will someone retrieve their car?
htric
2015-05-05 14:30:32
The no-parking signs could include a central number to call where you punch in your license plate. If it's an Uber-like system, it will know which towing company picked it up, and when. But I'm guessing it would require changes to the law at the state and local levels.

Because of unrelated construction work up by Allegheny Center, I haven't been able to get onto Federal Street to cross the Clemente Bridge in a few days anyhow. I just have to remember to continue doing what I'm doing already if that project wraps up before this other one starts.

I wonder which expansion dam they are replacing: the one on the south end, with the teeth that was plated over on the bike lanes, or the one on the north end, which had some work earlier this year. More likely the former?

Any plans for a protected lane on the Birmingham Bridge with the new construction? I noticed the former off-ramp that leads onto Forbes Avenue was being reconfigured. That would be perfect connection via the Bridge into Oakland if it were made into a protected lane.

@johnnyb. A bunch of us went to the public meeting concerning the Birmingham bridge project. They wouldnt even consider adding a crosswalk on the southside end - "there's no money for that" - this on a $20M project! This is yet another in a long list of great lost opportunities being performed with your tax money by PennDot.

Adds to the, "we don't have money to put in or replace sidewalks" statement made by PennDOT regarding the Bigelow Blvd. construction

Friday, 6pm. Giovanni's Pizza delivery car parked in protected bike lane (hazard lights flashing), 6th St between Fort Duquesne Blvd and Penn Ave. PA license plate JKM 8460. Giovanni's restaurant is on our left. I went inside and told the cashier there was a Giovanni's car parked in the bike lane. She was immediately apologetic and quickly found the driver and told him to move the car, and he did. That was a pretty good response, I thought. It didn't appear there were any parking spaces open in front of their business. We'll see if they are repeat offenders or not.

Giovanni's doesn't give a shit. They are largely the reason why the 6th St bike lane got bollards. If I recall correctly, the original plan for this lane didn't call for bollards to be put up. It was bollard-less for about a month, during which time drivers kept parking on it with impunity, and many of them were delivery drivers for Giovanni's. Even before the bike lane was put in, a good chunk of this curb was a "No parking" zone. Guess who didn't care? So perhaps we should thank them for being assholes and forcing the City to install bollards.

They are habitual offenders. I think I'll be buying some, "I Parked in a Bike Lane" stickers just for them.

Please get those stickers made. Please please please. I brought them up while riding past people parked in the bike lane on Ellsworth.

After looking at some of the other zazzle.com bumper stickers, I am not sure they take that statement the same way that a cyclist might. However I am pretty sure some people would rather not give them any business.

Every single time (not even exaggerating) I've been on 40th St. at night, the same white truck has been parked in the bike lane. Why isn't that person being towed every night until they learn their lesson?

I'd call 911 on the spot. I used to be a bit averse to it, but I found that it is the best way to get rid of illegal parking.

Rode into town on the Clemente earlier today. The bike lane is passable, but it's full of trash (broken umbrella, jacket, ...). There was always clear pavement, but really. Does the city have those lane-wide cleaners yet?

I don't know, but I'm sure they have people and brooms.

I saw a small motorized sweeper/cleaner on the Penn Ave cycle track the other day that would fit in the bike lanes on the bridge. Hopefully they'll clean up the bridge lanes soon, if they haven't done so already

311 it using the new web form. Then you know it's on their radar and they will let you know when it's clean.
