Did this really happen?

So did this happen to anyone here? Or maybe a friend of someone?

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/rnr/2026665653.html

For the most part I don't really look at the Rant and raves much, But there has been a huge amount of cycle hatred on there the last few days. I am sure 99% of it is bullshit but still kinda scary.

Sausage McMuffin? Is that code? Sounds cyclo-erotic to me. Dude's got sausage for the cyclist.

(Oops. My bad. That's probably not constructive. Post withdrawn...)

I wonder how cool that guy thinks this makes him.

rubberfactory

I don't know what's worse: the McFatty McRoad Rage or the passive-aggressive continuation onto CL. Lame.

noah-mustion
2010-10-26 21:14:40

I looked at teh CL rants - about 10% of them are about bikes.

I think it represents a) a greater awareness of the presence of bicycles and b) a scary degree of fear over change.

mick
2010-10-26 23:29:20

Most of those bikes are motorbikes.

lyle
2010-10-27 01:12:20

Wow, that's incredible. I didn't even know cl had that section. There are some truly sick individuals out there. To be honest, judging by the writing, it looks like one or two sad, sad people posting again and again. Although, knowing it exists, might be worth keeping track of in the event of any actual road incidents, idiots tend to like to publicize their stupidity.

edmonds59
2010-10-27 01:20:24

I like to post stupid rants on there, if only to detract from the even stupider rants on there. Today I'm going to post about eating a grapple.

rubberfactory
2010-10-27 12:11:41

@Noah Mustion the scary part is all the cyclists in this town that ask to be respected and then don't show it by running red lights/stop signs/playing in traffic. Realizing that most drivers don't discriminate between types of cyclists, I can't tell you how much that pisses me off. Everyone on two wheels represents everyone else, so behave people!

cmeyers
2010-10-27 13:58:22

@lyle- There are about 10% of the posts on bicycles and an additonal number about motorcycles.

mick
2010-10-27 14:36:39

@CMeyers

Uh. You don't have to tell me that. ..

greenbike
2010-10-28 00:39:40

@CMeyers - how many drivers "ask to be respected" by following the traffic laws? to a first approximation: zero. what you said is a BS excuse drivers give to "justify" their treatment of cyclists.

salty
2010-10-28 02:56:12

@CMeyers: While I understand both your point and frustration, there is no excuse for taking it to a level of assault and/or battery, which is what the driver in the Craigslist ad is guilty of, based on his flagrant admissions.

As someone who both drives and rides a bicycle, I'll admit to getting pissed off by bicyclists who don't follow traffic laws because they are not only endangering me, but also themselves and everyone else on the road, whether they be in a car, on a bike of some form, or on foot. But you know, the driver on a cell phone eating a Sausage McMuffin presents the same danger as that bicyclist, and so does a pedestrian who jaywalks across the street while texting and listening to loud music on an iPod. In other words, they ALL can "piss me off" and often do, as I try to be respectful to all those who commute, regardless of the way they decide to do it--and I feel that I am not the only one.

As a result, saying that "drivers don't discriminate between cyclists" may be true in one sense, but incredibly inaccurate in another. People commuting may not distinguish between road dangers, and at least in the City of Pittsburgh, road dangers include not only bicyclists who don't ride predictably and in accordance with laws, but also the drivers who text, run red lights, ignore lanes, and don't use turn signals, in addition to the pedestrians who aren't paying attention to their surroundings.

Assault and battery is no way to respond to illegal acts on the road...we've seen that with driver-to-driver road rage where people have been severely injured or killed. The same extends to driver-to-bicycle (or, bicycle-to-driver) road rage, and pedestrians as well. Everyone has a right to be on the road and with that comes a responsibility to respect that fact, despite the reality that some people don't take that responsibility seriously.

greenbike
2010-10-28 13:27:52

Does a sausage mcmuffin rise to the level of assault? A big mac, maybe, quarter pounder for sure, but a sausage mcmuffin?

atleastmykidsloveme
2010-10-28 15:12:41

Given the levels of sodium and grease, the mcmuffin definitely qualifies for "a salt and buttery" attack.

reddan
2010-10-28 15:19:52

...but only if it landed in the victim's mouth and was ingested, right? Otherwise its a dermatological matter I think. That grease is bad for the skin.

atleastmykidsloveme
2010-10-28 15:28:24

You can pepper your case with all the puns in the world, but you'll never make that buttery charge stick.

The Bicycle Bully Strikes Again (My cage)

My brother and I have been going around the Oakland, shadyside, Bloomfield area with wire

cutters...snapping spokes on any bikes we find parked outside. We will never be caught, you will never stop us.

I also spit on another cyclist yesterday evening on Forbes ave and Craig st...brown jeans, long blonde hair...I spit a nice size hawker

Right on his back HAHA!

Bringing street justice to the pavement of Pittsburgh since 86'

Yours truly,

The Bicycle Bully.

Wow, gone already, and the previous post says "Posted 8 minutes ago", which might've been a couple minutes ago, but only a couple.

stuinmccandless
2010-10-28 17:21:48

Well, at least we know what to look for now. Idiot's just made it easier for us to track him down.

greenbike
2010-10-28 17:59:48

Even better. Now we have a possible description. All we need is a license plate number.

Some people really need to get a life.

greenbike
2010-10-28 19:59:02

That post is gone, too. If we really want to nab these people, or have a hope at it, we need to preserve the evidence.

stuinmccandless
2010-10-28 20:02:40

Ok....if the guy posts again, whoever finds it needs to print off the posts, I guess.

What I'd love to see is the guy accidentally snip the spokes of a PGH police bike. That would be a scene to watch.

greenbike
2010-10-28 20:11:06

There is no way to nab them unless you get police to subpoena the poster's information from craigslist. If you do that, it shouldn't make any difference if it was flagged or deleted by the user. I don't know if they said enough in their post, or if you need an actual victim that was assaulted as described in the posts on craigslist?

dwillen
2010-10-28 20:13:11

@88MS88 if you still have that in your browser cache, can you cross-post it here? Do a few "back"s &/or if Firefox, History / Recently Closed Tabs.

stuinmccandless
2010-10-28 20:34:09

The post 88MS88 linked was some joke. It contained no real description unless this guy actually dresses up like a superhero (and in that case, it should be pretty easy to locate him).

dwillen
2010-10-28 20:36:00

Has anyone even heard of spokes being snipped, or per the original post, anyone been hit by a mcmuffin? It's entirely possible this is completely fabricated B.S. generated by this diseased Morlock at his keyboard.

edmonds59
2010-10-28 20:41:30

I vote that it's BS.

tabby
2010-10-28 20:48:30

I've been hit with foutain drinks and caffe. I have had near misses. I have had my bike vandalized.

Mostly last century, of course. These things don't happen -AS MUCH- anymore.

But don't doubt that they do happen.

Lost summer I was riding through Finleyville and something hit a telephone pole near me. It was some time before I realized that it was likely aimed at me.

I didn't post here about it. I did not report it to the police.

The guy posting might or might not be doing this stuff, but the lack of reports here means little.

mick
2010-10-28 20:59:47

I am more than a little worried that seeing it posted on CL or here or wherever will inspire some troll to actually go out and do it.

stuinmccandless
2010-10-28 21:43:00

Sorry all, I left the house and I have my browser set to delete all history/cookies. Sounds like dwillen read the response post, it was hilarious and clearly sarcasm. I usually assume that most of what these people on R&R have to say is complete bs.
