ELB/East Side Ride

The flyer below is for the web, but if you click on it, it links to a print quality one that you can take to any copy place. Please spread the word that this is going to be a fun, community building kind of ride. NOT an angry protest. much more in the spirit of FOC. also if anyone can bring some music it would be awesome. i just have the little speaker i use for riding in the woods.

Good job Colin.

We're neighbors. You've got a big Transition bikes sticker on you car, don't you?

yup. thats me!

i think my wife spotted you riding your fixed/ss up baker after the ride of silence last weekend. i would have been there but i had already planned and booked a 4 day downhill vacation for opening weekend.

also PTAG is putting together a Highland Park team if you are interested, although maurice might have already hit you up about that...

Woo! Calendar looks clear at the moment.

That's pretty short notice to scraperize a bike, though.

Is the "Village at Eastside" near Trader Joe's? Need location better defined. Address?

And if we're trying to involve neighborhood kids you may want to nix the "have fun with the kids" part. Makes it sound like the flyer is not addressed to them.

noah-mustion

changed the flyer.

the point of this ride isn't really to engage the kids that are attacking riders, they won't show up for something like this. it's to engage the community as a whole and get people that might have thought that rides are just for "lance types" and hipsters out and enjoying the area on a bike. more of a rolling block party than anything else. the more people we can get to go out and ride the safer we will all be.

btw, thats the name of the whole plaza. there is a huge sign at the entrance that says "the village at eastside"

I'll bring my stereo rig. Hopefully I can get it in an enclosure by then.

Can someone bring an MP3 player? (I don't everyone doesn't want to listen to my music after the last FOC)

i'll have my ipod with me. i'll see if i can get my wife to bring hers. mine is filled with jazz, metal, folk, hardcore, classic rock and lots of 90s-modern underground hip hop. she has tons of 80s and 90s pop music, pop-punk and ska.

The other day I saw a booklet titled "The Coalition Against Violence, community services directory", put out by B-PEP I think. Tons of contacts. It was not a copy I could take. It might be something to get hold of for people who have these concerns. It also might be worthwhile to let someone know that there are people from this community who want to work in concert with the existing coalition, ie. this ride.

Help, I am confused. Will this be a REALLY short ride through the neighborhood, or a not as short ride that makes a stop at Union Project for the Zone 5 Police Meeting at 7:00?

TJ/Village at EastSide at 6:30 was the starting point for a group ride to that event tonight.

I just want to be sure I get with the right group tonight.

swalfoort
2010-06-08 13:00:50

I plan to show up at TJ at 6:30, and from there bike to the Union Project for the meeting.

Not sure if anyone is planning a post-meeting night ride. I'm probably just going to get some dinner and go home after the meeting.

jz
2010-06-08 13:33:06

it will swing by the union project and anyone that wants to go to the meeting can drop off there. i plan to either continue the ride myself or hand it over to someone else who wants to lead it at that point if there are people who want to keep riding and not go to the meeting.

its all the same ride, just much shorter for some people than for others

My tall bike is currently in pieces (touching up some paint after a little welding to get the gears to work).

I can still bring my rigged up stereo if needed though.

This ride was really fun, even though half of us walked up some of those hills... I wish I didn't have to leave so soon.

Also had a great time! We ran into some kids that were doing some small repairs on their bikes in Morningside--Nick helped them out then they joined us on our trip to Highland Park.

Looking forward to another East Side Ride.

After going to the meeting, I wonder if I shouldn't have stayed with the ride. That thought hit me during the DARE-like "how not to get burgled" lesson... I think last week's Council on the Go was a little more constructive. But we did get to vent our frustrations a little, and hear some community perspectives on cyclists, and set them straight a little... also found out about an assault on a pedestrian on upper Highland Ave on June 6 - he was beaten by a couple teenagers. Broken wrist, fingers, etc. Probably the same MFers who ghost-rode their bike into Justin, smashed my car windows, etc.

it was fun. wish i had brought lights and wish i had brought my geared bike. nice meeting all of you. and thanks to nick for the delicious ice

I'm down for another regular ride if you're trying to put one together.

rick
2010-06-09 10:20:54

Those hills kicked my ass..haha.But i'm glad i wasn't the only one that walked up one of them, i kept up,even led a little, the ride was a nice pace.Hit 36mph a few times..haha.It was fun meeting all of you, i didn't catch anyones names but i think 7 or 8 of us wound up coming down into the Strip,North Shore,to the Point then to OTB to have a beer.Def. a good night!

2010-06-09 13:29:47

I was a part of that last group going down to OTB as well (Jon, on the black fixed gear, spinning like mad down Penn Ave). It was great meeting you guys and girls - looking forward to riding with you again!

Dave here, red Trek, fatty slicks, hung through OTB

i'm not usually one for group rides, but this one felt important to me so i made sure to show. pleasure meeting/riding with you all, totally positive experience. rode through parts of town i'd never seen before, which is always a major bonus.

thanks to HoffmannJ for the lockup, and salty for the brew!

spinballer

Yeah, salty, thanks for the drink!

Dave, even though I know you don't like group rides, I think you should consider coming to a Midnight Mass. They are quick-ish rides with plenty of hills, and being at night there is very little traffic and traffic lights cycle much faster.

ndromb
2010-06-09 16:31:47

i was the last girl that made it down to the arts fest but had to get home, as it was getting dark and i had no lights. that really was nice of you, nick, to stop and help those kids. i will try to make it out to midnight mass.. riding a geared bike. i cannot stand having to walk up hills.
